Country music star Tim McGraw took a hard spill onstage Thursday night in Cincinnati, falling flat on his back mid-performance after his boot got caught in a groove on the stage platform. The mishap happened as he was singing one of his biggest ’90s hits, “I Like It, I Love It,” at Riverbend Music Center.
Video of the tumble shows McGraw momentarily airborne, feet straight up, before he lands on his back. He quickly sat up, flashed a grin, and resumed the song as if nothing had happened.
Self-Deprecating Instagram Post
The singer later shared the clip on his Instagram with a humorous caption: “Cincinnati, you started our weekend off on the right foot even if I couldn’t stay on mine,” complete with a crying-laughing emoji. The post used the popular “record scratch, freeze frame” meme format, zooming in on the moment his boot heel gets stuck before cutting back to him sitting up and continuing.
McGraw’s History of Onstage Mishaps
This isn’t the first time McGraw has handled an onstage mishap with humor. As Page Six noted, he collapsed from dehydration during a performance at the Country to Country festival in Dublin, Ireland, in March 2018. At the time, he laughed off the incident by sharing a photo of himself in scuba gear at the bottom of the ocean with the caption “Hydrating.”
Thursday night’s fall is unlikely to derail the tour, and McGraw appeared to take it in stride, even joking about his inability to stay upright.
Late Start and a “Hell of a Show”
The concert itself got off to a rocky start. McGraw arrived onstage about 40 minutes after his set was scheduled to begin, according to local reporter David Wysong. “I made it!” he announced, apologizing for the delay and blaming “travel and weather issues.”
Wysong, writing for the Cincinnati Enquirer, observed that McGraw “seemed rushed due to his late start” but nevertheless “put on a hell of a show.” After the hard fall, Wysong reported, the performer “recovered well” and began stretching between songs.
Parton Tribute
Although McGraw did not pay tribute to the late Dolly Parton during Thursday’s concert, he shared a photo on social media earlier in the week calling the singer-songwriter “the blueprint” for his genre — “head and shoulders above anyone that came before her and all those of us that have come after.”
McGraw continues his tour with a reputation for resilience and a good sense of humor about the occasional onstage stumble.
