McCaskill: Trump Is the ‘Ultimate Socialism President’

Former Sen. Claire McCaskill argues President Trump embodies socialist values more than most Democrats, citing his intervention in business and attacks on antitrust enforcement.

McCaskill: Trump Is the ‘Ultimate Socialism President’

Former Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill launched a sharp critique of President Donald Trump on Monday, declaring that no president in U.S. history has been more aligned with socialism than Trump. Appearing on MSNBC’s Deadline, McCaskill argued that Trump’s actions in office—particularly his willingness to intervene in private enterprise and his administration’s approach to antitrust enforcement—place him far outside the bounds of traditional free-market conservatism.

“There has never been a president that has been more of a socialism president than Donald Trump,” McCaskill said. She pointed to Trump’s efforts to “take control of American businesses” and negotiate for a stake in their operations, as well as his push for a stronger central government relative to state and local authorities. In her view, those moves reflect “the values of socialism way more than the vast majority of the candidates running with the Democratic Party behind their name.”

Antitrust Under Fire

McCaskill’s comments came in response to Trump’s recent public positioning as a defender of open markets and free enterprise. She dismissed that framing as contradicted by his record, specifically accusing the president of gutting the Department of Justice’s antitrust division—what she called “the cop on the beat trying to go after corporations that get these monopolies.”

“It’s pretty obvious to anybody who’s watching that Trump has dismantled the antitrust division of DOJ,” she said, adding that the result has been a concentration of corporate power across major sectors of the economy.

Google and Lake Ontario

McCaskill cited a curious example to illustrate the reach of corporate monopolies: the speed with which Google changed the name of Lake Ontario on its mapping services. She suggested that such influence demonstrates why companies like Google and Amazon have become “one of the biggest monopolies… that are impacting all of our lives.”

The former Missouri senator’s remarks add to a growing chorus of Democratic criticism of Trump’s economic policies, though her explicit linking of Trump to socialism—a label Republicans have long tried to attach to Democrats—marks a notable rhetorical turn.

Trump has not yet responded to McCaskill’s comments.
