Iran’s Islamic Republic has escalated its crackdown on dissent, sentencing 10 young anti-government activists to death in what activists describe as a sham trial in Isfahan. The verdicts, delivered by Branch 1 of the Isfahan Revolutionary Court, target protesters rounded up during January’s nationwide demonstrations, according to political activist Mehdi Mahmoudian’s Khabaraneha Telegram channel, cited by The Daily Wire.
Among those condemned is 20-year-old Taraneh Rahimi, whose case has drawn international attention. Rahimi’s crime, according to activist Masih Alinejad, was joining the January uprising and intervening to stop the beating of another protester. Alinejad reported that Rahimi was tortured with electric shocks and threatened with rape before receiving her death sentence.
The other nine sentenced to death are Navid Elyasi, Mehrdad Boeri, Abolfazl Dadgostar, Armin Gholami, Mehdi Mansouri, Ahmadreza Saeedi, Mohammadmehdi Asadi, Parsa Jafari, and Mehdi Jafari. The group is part of a broader case involving 16 activists arrested during the unrest in Isfahan.
Relatives and co-defendants hit with lengthy prison terms
While Rahimi awaits execution, her twin sister, Romina Rahimi, was sentenced to 25 years in prison, as was Milad Boeri. Four other co-defendants received sentences ranging from five to 15 years. All 16 defendants were given additional time on charges of “incitement” and “propaganda against the establishment.”
The trial, dubbed the “Isfahan Shohada Square” case, has sparked international outrage over allegations of torture, forced confessions, and sexual violence inside Iranian detention facilities. Activists say the court ignored a formal abuse complaint filed by one of the female detainees before issuing its verdicts.
Defendant Ahmadreza Saeedi reportedly confronted judges in court, revealing that he was brutally tortured during interrogation to extract a false confession. Legal representation was effectively absent, with defense attorneys barred from reviewing case files.
International condemnation grows
Exiled Iranian Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi blasted the verdicts as “brutal and unjust,” slamming the regime’s “sham legal process” and calling on the international community to respond to what he described as “horrific atrocities.”
The latest death sentences come amid a broader execution spree by the Islamic Republic. According to reports, authorities have already hanged five protesters in Isfahan since July in a separate crackdown known as the Alikhani Square case, with multiple executions carried out publicly in the city square to instill fear.
Other cases raise alarm
Human rights groups report that executions are accelerating nationwide. In Tehran, 26-year-old Ali-Asghar Peyghambari is on death row at Ghezel Hesar Prison after the Supreme Court upheld his sentence on charges of “cooperation with Israel.” Peyghambari, a curtain shop owner, was arrested for filming himself joining a bazaar strike over Iran’s economic crisis, according to social media posts by Alinejad.
In Qom, state media announced the public execution of 19-year-old Saleh Mohammadi in March. Mohammadi was an award-winning international wrestler. Separately, 27-year-old auto mechanic Reza Zanganeh faces imminent execution on charges of “enmity against God.”
Beautician and mother of two Leila Abolhasani was also condemned to death for filming a burning supermarket on her phone. Activists warn that 16-year-old Diana Taherabadi could be next, as the regime intensifies its crackdown on perceived opponents.
As Iran’s leadership tries to maintain control through state terror, human rights groups are urging global leaders to intervene before more innocent young protesters are sent to the gallows.
