An incendiary new column from American Thinker’s Eric Utter argues that a disturbing pattern of mothers killing their own children reflects a society corrupted by feminism, progressivism, and the normalization of abortion.
The piece, published September 1 under the headline “Mothers, murder, and what this country is coming to,” opens with a prayer for “the children of our mothers, an increasing number of whom are revealing themselves to be cold-blooded killers.”
Utter draws a direct line from abortion access to the murders, writing that “it is a slippery slope we go down when we allow abortion up until the moment of birth” and when babies born alive are “set aside and left to die.” He also references discussions of “after-birth abortion” as evidence of moral decay.
But the bulk of the column focuses on specific, recent criminal cases — and on the legal defenses being offered for the accused mothers.
The Lindsay Clancy case
The central case Utter cites is that of Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts nurse accused of killing her three young children — ages 5, 3, and 8 months — in what the column calls “pre-meditated murder” and “a triple-homicide.”
Utter reserves particular scorn for Clancy’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, who reportedly told the court, “This young lady did nothing wrong in her life,” and added, “She was a nurse, a daughter, a wife, and a darn good mother.”
Utter calls those statements “unmitigated gall” and compares them to calling Hitler “a darn good Jew” despite the Holocaust, or praising a dentist whose “every one of his patients died in his chair.”
The column suggests the prosecution should have objected that the defense attorney’s assertion was “so preposterous that no one should ever again listen to anything” he says, and that he should be disbarred.
Other cases cited
Beyond Clancy, Utter highlights two other cases:
— Kailey Erhart, 22, of North Dakota, who police say recently stabbed her 5-month-old and 3-year-old children to death after waving a gun at her estranged husband and threatening to kill herself.
— Madeline Daly, 36, recently convicted in New Mexico for kidnapping and killing her 11-month-old son, reportedly shooting him in the face. Daly allegedly said the murder was “worth it” to deprive the child’s father of custody.
Ideological argument
Utter’s broader argument is that these cases are not random aberrations but products of a larger cultural shift. “Feminism has fundamentally transformed many women. Ruined them,” he writes. “Progressivism has set the stage for entitlement, lawlessness, and moral confusion on a societal scale.”
The column asserts that society has reached a point where “we will tolerate any depravity, any crime— no matter how heinous— but we won’t tolerate intolerance of depravity and criminality.”
Utter closes by invoking broadcaster Paul Harvey: “The end result for a society such as that is too obvious to require elaboration.”
