RNC boots CBC from Dallas convention over 9/11 ‘terrorist’ memo

The Republican National Committee has revoked media credentials for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation at its upcoming midterm convention in Dallas, after the network instructed its journalists not to refer to the September 11 attacks as terrorist acts.

The RNC told Breitbart News that when CBC learned its credentials had been pulled, the network “cried wolf,” claiming the move was an attempt to “control the press.”

Convention coincides with 9/11 anniversary

The two-day convention, scheduled for September 9 and 10, is set to include a memorial marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance are slated to speak at the event, which the party is billing as a showcase for its 2026 midterm candidates and the administration’s agenda.

“Allowing an organization whose guidance instructed journalists not to characterize the September 11 attacks as terrorism would be an insult to the American (and Canadian) families, victims, and survivors affected by the attacks,” the party said in a statement.

CBC memo sparked controversy

The controversy began last week when a memo circulated among CBC staff directing them to avoid labeling the September 11 attacks as terrorist attacks. The memo further instructed journalists to “generally avoid labeling any specific bombing or other assault as a ‘terrorist act’ unless this term is attributed,” according to the RNC’s account.

CBC initially defended the directive, pointing to a longstanding policy requiring reporters to use “terrorist” and “terrorism” only with attribution. But after the backlash, the network said it had reversed the guidance on 9/11—a reversal that did not change the RNC’s decision.

The move underscores the ongoing friction between conservative political organizations and mainstream media outlets over language and framing, particularly when it comes to terrorism and national security matters.

The convention is expected to frame the midterms as a choice between what Republicans describe as “common sense” and “crazy,” highlighting achievements such as the Working Families Tax Cuts, border security, anti-fraud efforts, and a reported historic drop in crime.
