Sony Pictures Television has suspended veteran Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton while it investigates allegations tied to an incident on a commercial airline flight, the studio confirmed this week. The company also said it is already in the process of recasting the announcing role, a significant shake-up for the long-running game show.
“We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton. He has been suspended from Wheel of Fortune, and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation,” a studio spokeswoman told multiple outlets, according to Breitbart News.
The studio has not named a temporary replacement for Thornton, who has been the show’s announcer since 2011.
Alleged Incident on American Airlines Flight
While Sony Pictures Television did not specify the nature of the allegations, TMZ, which first reported the story, said the suspension stems from an alleged incident on an American Airlines flight in May. A fellow passenger reportedly complained to a flight attendant about Thornton, leading the pilot to allegedly radio ahead and request that law enforcement meet the announcer when the plane arrived at the gate.
The 61-year-old announcer has not been arrested or charged, and his lawyer has vehemently denied any wrongdoing.
Lawyer Denies Wrongdoing
In a statement provided to TMZ, Thornton’s attorney said his client “did not engage in any illegal conduct, was not arrested, and has not been charged with any crime.” The lawyer added that after the complaint was made, law enforcement spoke with Thornton for “five minutes or less” and “immediately determined that no wrongdoing had occurred and told my client he was free to go.”
The attorney’s statement stops short of describing what the passenger alleged, and neither Sony nor law enforcement agencies have publicly detailed the complaint.
Thornton’s Career at Wheel of Fortune
Thornton first stepped behind the microphone for Wheel of Fortune in September 2011. He auditioned for the role in December 2010 following the death of longtime announcer Charlie O’Donnell and was officially confirmed as the show’s new voice on June 13, 2011. For more than a decade, his voice has been a staple of the syndicated program, which continues to draw millions of daily viewers.
Sony’s decision to recast the role — rather than simply pause Thornton’s duties pending the investigation — suggests the studio may be preparing for a longer-term change, though the company has not indicated whether Thornton could eventually return.
The news has generated considerable buzz among fans of the show, who have grown accustomed to Thornton’s signature delivery of the program’s opening and closing lines. Neither Thornton nor his representatives have commented beyond the lawyer’s statement to TMZ.
