North Carolina 13-Year-Old Football Player Dies After Cardiac Arrest at Practice

A North Carolina family is mourning the loss of a 13-year-old middle school football player who died after suffering cardiac arrest during practice last week.

Caden Sorrell, a student at Northwest Guilford Middle School in Greensboro, N.C., had just completed one lap around the practice field when he suddenly went into cardiac arrest, according to local reports. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died three days later.

His older sister, Vanessa Clark, described Caden as ā€œan angel from heavenā€ in an interview with WXII, remembering him as ā€œbrilliant, sweet, smart, kindā€ and someone who made everyone around him feel loved.

ā€œHe was a picture of health. We don’t know why [it happened], but it did,ā€ Clark added.

The family is now grappling with the sudden loss of a young athlete who wore jersey No. 42 and was a devoted Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Clark recalled a playful moment with her brother that highlighted his strength and their close bond.

ā€œWe were trying to wrestle because I thought I could take him, and I couldn’t. He taught me the hard way that I could not, but it was just the laughter that we shared together,ā€ Clark said.

She also shared the emotional final moments she spent with her brother at the hospital.

ā€œI was praying for him, and I hoped that he got better, that he was healed, which he was spiritually,ā€ Clark said. ā€œI’m there for him, and I love him.ā€

Community Rallies Around Family

In the wake of the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to help cover medical and funeral expenses. The funds will also go toward further medical testing for Caden’s four surviving siblings, as the family seeks to rule out any genetic cause that may have triggered the cardiac event.

The sudden death of a seemingly healthy 13-year-old has raised questions among local families about the risks of youth sports and the importance of cardiac screening. While the exact cause of Caden’s cardiac arrest remains unknown, his sister’s words reflect a family determined to find answers and support one another through their grief.

The Northwest Guilford Middle School community has also been impacted, with students and staff grappling with the loss of a classmate and teammate. The school has not yet released a statement, but local officials have expressed condolences to the family.

Caden’s death adds to a broader conversation about sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes, a rare but devastating event that has prompted some schools and sports organizations to implement additional safety measures, including the availability of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and emergency action plans.

For now, the Sorrell family is left with memories of a boy who brought joy to those around him and a determination to ensure that other families don’t have to face the same uncertainty.
