An illegal immigrant from Haiti, now accused of murdering a woman and attacking another in Lee County, Florida, had been released into the United States by the Biden administration, according to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials.
DHS identified the suspect as 28-year-old Whycliff Longin, who entered the U.S. illegally through Florida in 2024. Despite his unlawful entry, the administration at the time allowed him to remain in the country rather than detain or deport him, officials said Wednesday.
The case has reignited criticism of border policies under former President Joe Biden, with current DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin placing blame squarely on that administration.
“This dangerous illegal alien should have never been allowed into our country in the first place,” Mullin said in a statement. “If it weren’t for the Biden administration’s reckless open-border policies, Amadette Longin would still be alive. ICE has lodged a detainer and will work with our partners in Florida to make sure this killer is never released onto our streets ever again.”
Longin is accused of killing his aunt, Amadette Longin, and strangling his cousin, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, as first reported by Breitbart News.
The cousin told police she woke up to find Longin strangling her. She was able to break free and hid in a bathroom of the residence, according to accounts from investigators. When officers arrived, they located Longin at a neighboring duplex and took him into custody.
During a search of the home, authorities found Amadette Longin’s body. Family members told police that she had given her nephew a place to stay. Longin now faces charges including murder, attempted murder, sexual battery, and burglary involving battery. He remains held in Lee County custody.
A Pattern of Criticism
The case is likely to intensify ongoing political debates over immigration enforcement and the handling of individuals who enter the country illegally. Critics of the Biden administration’s border policies have pointed to similar incidents, arguing that releasing undocumented migrants into the interior poses public safety risks.
Supporters of more lenient immigration policies, meanwhile, often caution against linking isolated criminal cases to broader immigration trends, noting that crime rates among immigrant populations have historically been lower than those among native-born citizens. Still, each high-profile incident involving an undocumented immigrant accused of a violent crime tends to fuel calls for tougher enforcement.
The DHS statement from Secretary Mullin did not provide details on why Longin was released in 2024, nor did it specify whether he was enrolled in any monitoring program after his release.
ICE has now lodged a detainer against Longin, which means the agency is requesting that local authorities hold him so federal officials can pursue removal proceedings after his criminal case concludes.
