Reform UK has promised to deliver thousands of pounds in tax relief for roughly 40 million Britons within its first 100 days in government, as the party seeks to capitalize on public frustration with the highest tax burden since the Second World War.
At Reform UK’s annual conference in Birmingham on Saturday, Robert Jenrick — the figure Nigel Farage has chosen to lead the Treasury if the party wins the next election — declared that taxpayers have been “squeezed for twenty years.” He blamed the political establishment for a steady erosion of living standards.
“No wonder so many of our most ambitious young people are seeking their futures abroad. The old parties did this. Not by accident — by consensus. A twenty-five-year conspiracy against the British worker,” Jenrick told the crowd.
Personal Allowance Rise
The centerpiece of Jenrick’s announcement is an increase in the personal allowance — the income level below which no tax is paid — from the current £12,570 to £15,000. The threshold has remained frozen since 2021 and is scheduled to stay flat until 2031, a policy that critics note effectively functions as a tax increase as inflation pushes more income into taxable brackets, a phenomenon known as fiscal drag.
Jenrick argued that his proposal would save money for about 40 million Britons and constitute the largest rise in the personal allowance in history.
To pay for the tax cut, Reform outlined £108 billion in budget cuts and cost-reduction measures, including £50 billion in cuts to the welfare system. A key element of that plan would be preventing foreign citizens from accessing UK benefits, a policy the party says would curb spending while protecting the welfare state for British citizens.
In a dramatic move, Jenrick committed that if he fails to deliver the tax cut within 100 days of taking office, he will resign from his post. He revealed that he has already signed a pre-dated resignation letter.
“If I don’t deliver this exactly when I have said that I will, I will resign. No ifs, no buts, I will be gone,” he said.
Conference Amid Controversy
The tax announcement comes as Reform UK navigates internal turmoil. Two senior figures — longtime Farage aide Dan Jukes and policy chief James Orr — have been suspended after footage published by far-left climate activists appeared to show them accepting donations and commissioning a poll from a fake American political donor.
Reform has denied any wrongdoing but has launched an internal investigation into the matter. Party leader Nigel Farage said Friday that Reform is being targeted by the establishment for challenging the status quo, and he maintained that the party has not accepted any illicit money or broken election rules.
Despite the controversy, the conference saw Reform make waves on other fronts, including a notable foreign policy development. French National Rally leader Jordan Bardella joined Farage on stage to sign an agreement committing to a policy of migrant boat pushbacks in the English Channel — a concession from Paris that has eluded successive British governments.
Deputy leader Richard Tice also used the conference to promise a reduction of average household energy bills by £250 per year. He said Reform would eliminate carbon taxes on generators and remove VAT from consumer energy bills to achieve the savings.
The party’s platform is being framed as a direct challenge to the Conservative and Labour parties, both of which have overseen rising taxes, according to Reform. With the next general election expected within the next few years, Reform is positioning itself as the only party willing to take immediate, dramatic action to ease the financial burden on ordinary Britons.
