Patrick Clancy’s lawyer is pushing back hard against a growing wave of online speculation that the Massachusetts father was somehow involved in the deaths of his three children — a tragedy for which his ex-wife, Lindsay Clancy, has admitted responsibility.
In a statement Tuesday, attorney Howard Cooper said Patrick Clancy and his family have been subjected to a “relentless, escalating, and destructive defamation campaign” over the past months, according to CBS News. The statement took direct aim at the online figures fueling the accusations.
“This campaign of misinformation has been launched and promoted by minor celebrities, so-called influencers, and outright conspiracy theorists who appear intent on boosting their own social media profiles and potential profit by publishing what they know to be outright falsehoods that Patrick was somehow involved in the death of his young children, and other vile claims,” Cooper said.
He did not mince words about what comes next.
“Enough is enough — this spread of blatant and baseless falsehoods must stop. Those responsible should understand that there will be consequences, and every appropriate measure will be pursued to hold them accountable, including legally. Law enforcement has been notified,” the statement said.
The warning follows a week of intense public attention on the case, which ended in a mistrial last Friday after jurors deadlocked on whether Lindsay Clancy should be found not guilty by reason of insanity in the 2023 killings of the couple’s children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months.
Lindsay Clancy, 36, admitted to strangling the three children at the family’s home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in January 2023. Her defense has argued that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and did not understand what she was doing at the time.
According to Breitbart News, the jury — nine women and three men — split 11-1 in favor of acquittal after seven days of deliberations totaling more than 36 hours. A lone male juror, reports said, held out against the majority, blocking a verdict that would have cleared Lindsay by reason of insanity. Female jurors reportedly broke down in court when the deadlock was announced.
Judge William Sullivan formally declared the mistrial, leaving the case in limbo and raising the possibility of a retrial.
Since the mistrial, Lindsay Clancy’s defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, has taken an extraordinary step, publicly appealing to President Donald Trump to grant her a presidential pardon, while continuing to argue that she should not be held criminally responsible for the children’s deaths.
“Mr. President, I would hope that you would consider this young lady, the type of person she is, what she’s been through, and consider a pardon,” Reddington said, according to Breitbart News.
Trump has weighed in on the case, telling reporters, “I assume there’s going to be another trial. It’s a terrible situation. Look, she did a horrible, horrible thing. Can’t be worse.”
The case has sparked intense public sympathy for Lindsay Clancy, with many supporters pointing to her struggles with postpartum mental health. But the online narrative has also taken a darker turn, with some social media users and minor internet personalities suggesting Patrick Clancy was somehow complicit in the murders — claims his lawyer now calls not just baseless, but destructive and potentially illegal.
Patrick Clancy has largely stayed out of the public eye since the tragedy, but through his attorney, he has now made clear that he intends to hold the spreaders of these allegations accountable.
Cooper’s statement singled out the financial motive behind some of the campaign, accusing certain figures of using the tragedy to “boost their own social media profiles and potential profit” by publishing lies.
It remains to be seen whether Cooper will follow through with defamation lawsuits, but his language was unambiguous: “There will be consequences.”
The case has now entered a new legal phase, with the question of a retrial looming, and Lindsay Clancy’s fate still uncertain. For Patrick Clancy, the fight has become twofold — grieving the loss of his children while defending his own name against a torrent of online accusations.
“Every appropriate measure will be pursued,” Cooper warned, “to hold them accountable, including legally.”
