The NFL’s global expansion takes another leap this week as Australia hosts its first regular-season game, with a sellout crowd of more than 100,000 expected at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) for Friday’s clash between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers.

Tickets for the cavernous venue were snapped up within minutes, according to AFP, underscoring the league’s growing appeal in a nation already obsessed with sports. The game is part of the NFL’s record nine-game international schedule spanning four continents and seven countries in 2026.

Flag Football Fuels Australian Interest

AFP reports that Australian enthusiasm for the NFL is being driven largely by the rapid rise of flag football, a non-contact version of the sport that has exploded in popularity since being added to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The game is also a candidate for the 2032 Brisbane Games, which has further boosted its profile.

Flag football programs now operate in roughly 500 Australian schools, up from just 10 in 2022 when a pilot program launched, according to AFP. The NFL recently partnered with American Football Australia to expand the national schools program further, part of a broader grassroots push.

“Australia has emerged as one of the most exciting growth markets for flag football globally,” said Charlotte Offord, the NFL’s general manager for Australia and New Zealand, per AFP.

Australia, with a population of 28 million, is already home to 6.6 million NFL fans, according to the league.

A Prime-Time Gamble for U.S. Audiences

To cater to viewers back in the United States, the Melbourne game is scheduled for a 10:35 a.m. local kickoff, which translates to Thursday evening prime time across much of America.

The league’s international push is gathering momentum. NFL owners have approved up to 10 international games per season starting in 2027, Reuters reports, though expanding beyond that would require approval from the NFL Players Association. While the costs of staging games abroad are steep, they are offset by ticket revenues and host fees.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell predicted last month that a franchise based outside the United States is inevitable, as Breitbart News reported.

Local Officials and a Historic Nod

Victorian state minister for major events Anthony Carbines welcomed the influx of NFL activity, calling events like this “economic powerhouses” that fill hotels, support jobs, and put the state on the world stage.

Interestingly, the MCG is no stranger to American football. The first such match played there was in 1908, when sailors from the USS Minnesota and USS Kentucky faced off in a 0-0 tie during the U.S. Navy’s “Great White Fleet” world tour.

Friday’s game promises a livelier affair, with the 49ers and Rams bringing their rivalry to the Southern Hemisphere for what could be a historic moment in the NFL’s global ambitions.
