Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) refused to answer questions on Capitol Hill this week about a police raid on a Minneapolis home shared by her 20-year-old son and a convicted felon, according to a report from Fox News.
The search warrant was executed on August 25, and officers discovered multiple weapons and ammunition inside the residence, Fox News reported. The home is shared by Omar’s son, Adnan Hirsi, and his roommate, Abdulrahman Abdi, 22.
The raid stemmed from a traffic stop. Abdi was pulled over for a routine stop and found to have no driver’s license or proof of insurance, per the report. He was released and his car was impounded. Police later found a firearm in the vehicle — a weapon Abdi is prohibited from possessing as a convicted felon. That discovery led authorities to obtain and execute the search warrant at the shared home.
No Arrests, No Charges for Omar’s Son
Hirsi was not arrested and is not accused of any crime. Omar herself is not accused of any wrongdoing. Still, the circumstances have raised questions about her son’s living arrangement with Abdi, who has a lengthy criminal history.
When approached by reporter Nicholas Ballasy in the halls of Congress, Omar was asked directly about the situation. “What do you know about the situation, why it happened in the first place?” Ballasy asked, according to the account.
Omar did not respond and kept walking. Ballasy pressed further: “Are you going to advise your son to move from his place? Away from that situation? We were just wondering what you thought about the whole thing.”
The congresswoman continued without answering. Her office also did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the outlet.
Roommate’s Record Includes Ten Prior Arrests
Abdi was released a day after his arrest and now faces a weapons charge, Fox News reported. According to the same report, he has been arrested ten times previously and was convicted of a felony speeding charge in 2024 for driving in excess of 100 miles per hour.
The episode puts a spotlight on the intersection of Omar’s public advocacy and her family’s private life. Omar has been a vocal supporter of stricter gun regulations and has backed efforts to tighten federal firearms laws — a stance that critics argue sits awkwardly alongside the discovery of weapons in a home shared by her son and a man barred from owning a gun.
