Linda Sarsour’s MPower Change Launches National Muslim Voter Registration Day Across 15+ States

A Muslim political action group co-founded by Linda Sarsour is hosting a nationwide voter registration drive on Friday, September 18, with events planned in more than 15 states. The effort, led by MPower Change, is the latest installment of National Muslim Voter Registration Day, an initiative the group launched in 2018 to mobilize Muslim American voters each election cycle.

According to its website, MPower Change describes itself as “building a mass movement of diverse U.S. Muslims and allies ready to fight for a future free from Islamophobia and white supremacy.” The group, a Muslim 501(c)(3) nonprofit, adds that it is “rooted in the Islamic faith” and mobilizes “online and in person on campaigns for racial, social, and economic justice.” Breitbart reported on the planned events.

Organizers say the project is nonpartisan and focused on voter education and civic engagement. Events are scheduled in New York, New Jersey, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, California, Tennessee, Georgia, Minnesota, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, among other states. Since its inception, the campaign has registered thousands of Muslim voters, according to the group.

Sarsour Points to Michigan and Florida

In a statement, Sarsour framed the 2026 cycle as a breakthrough moment for Muslim political participation. “It has been a historic year for our community at the ballot box – from helping to elect New York City’s first Muslim mayor to other Muslim candidates poised to make history,” she said. “This didn’t happen overnight. We began this work 10 years ago, and now we are building on this momentum across the country, especially in states like Michigan and Florida where the stakes are so high.”

Sarsour’s mention of Michigan and Florida drew attention because both states feature competitive Senate races involving Muslim Democrats. In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed, a Muslim socialist, is the Democratic nominee facing Republican Mike Rogers in a closely watched contest. One media report has described El-Sayed as a “protégé” of Sarsour dating back to his failed 2018 gubernatorial campaign.

In Florida, Sarsour has endorsed Democrat Angie Nixon, who is running against Republican incumbent Sen. Ashley Moody in November. On Facebook, Sarsour praised Nixon’s record of engagement with communities. “Angie Nixon doesn’t just court communities when she’s running for office. She builds year round,” Sarsour wrote. “She didn’t start fighting for Palestinians because she was running for US Senate – she was an ally and willful accomplice as she calls it when it was NOT popular.” Sarsour noted that Nixon was outspent 16 to 1 but won her primary anyway. “It’s now all hands on deck for Angie Nixon,” she added.

A Broader Mobilization Effort

MPower Change’s registration drive is part of a larger push by Muslim advocacy groups to increase turnout in a midterm election year. While the organization insists its work is nonpartisan, its leadership and endorsements have aligned with progressive and Democratic causes. Sarsour, a prominent activist, has been a polarizing figure nationally, drawing both support and sharp criticism for her views and associations.

The states targeted by the registration drive include several with significant Muslim populations and competitive races. Michigan and Florida, in particular, could see elevated Muslim voter engagement given the high-profile Senate candidates. In Michigan, El-Sayed’s campaign has energized progressive voters, while Rogers, a former congressman, is seeking to hold the seat for Republicans. In Florida, Nixon’s bid against Moody is another contest where Muslim turnout could matter.

National Muslim Voter Registration Day has been held in previous cycles, and MPower Change says it has registered thousands of voters. The group’s efforts come amid broader debates over the role of identity and religion in American politics, with both parties courting Muslim voters in swing states.

Friday’s events are expected to include in-person registration drives, phone banks, and online outreach. MPower Change has not released a full list of locations, but the 15-plus states span the country, from California to New York. The organization says its goal is to ensure Muslim Americans have a voice at the ballot box and to build long-term political power.

For Sarsour, the day represents a continuation of a decade-long project. “We began this work 10 years ago,” she said, “and now we are building on this momentum across the country.” Whether that momentum translates into electoral wins in Michigan, Florida, and beyond will be tested in November.
