The Federalist argues that Barack Obama laid the groundwork for today's progressive Democratic Party through policies and rhetoric that normalized left-wing positions, challenging narratives that portray him as a moderate.

Analysis: Obama's Legacy Shapes Modern Democratic Party's Progressive Turn, Conservative Outlet Claims

A new analysis from The Federalist contends that former President Barack Obama was instrumental in shaping what the outlet characterizes as the modern Democratic Party’s progressive direction, challenging recent narratives that position Obama as a political moderate relative to newer Democratic Socialist-aligned politicians.

The piece, published Thursday, argues against what it describes as a “widespread narrative” suggesting that establishment Democrats like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries represent a moderate wing battling more radical newcomers. Instead, according to The Federalist, these figures represent different factions within an already-progressive party that Obama helped create.

Policy Legacy and Signature Legislation

The outlet points to the Affordable Care Act as a foundational example of what it characterizes as Obama’s progressive policy-making. The 2010 health care law, which required individuals to carry insurance or face penalties and mandated coverage for pre-existing conditions, represented what The Federalist describes as “the biggest government takeover of health care in U.S. history.”

According to the analysis, health insurance premiums have nearly doubled since the law’s passage, and taxpayers continue subsidizing the program despite Obama’s pledge that it wouldn’t add “a dime” to the national debt. The piece recalls then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s controversial statement that “we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it.”

Controversial Associations

The Federalist draws parallels between Obama’s past associations and those of newer progressive candidates. The outlet notes Obama’s relationship with Bill Ayers, a founder of the Weather Underground, which the FBI designated as a domestic terrorist group. According to Influence Watch, cited in the piece, Ayers “does not regret setting bombs” and believes his conduct “wasn’t extreme enough in fighting racism.”

The analysis also references Obama’s 20-year membership in Reverend Jeremiah Wright’s church, noting Wright’s “God damn America” sermon and comments blaming the U.S. for the September 11 attacks. Obama separated from Wright as his presidential campaign intensified. The piece additionally mentions a photograph of Obama with Louis Farrakhan and Farrakhan’s endorsement of the then-senator.

Rhetoric on American Identity

The outlet highlights statements from both Barack and Michelle Obama that it characterizes as critical of American traditions. The former president campaigned on “fundamentally transforming the United States of America,” while Michelle Obama stated, according to The Federalist, “We’re going to have to change our traditions, our history; we’re going to have to move into a different place as a nation.”

The piece cites Michelle Obama’s 2008 comment that “for the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country,” which she later walked back, and Barack Obama’s characterization of the Constitution as “stained by this nation’s original sin of slavery.”

Race and Law Enforcement

The Federalist traces what it describes as progressive tactics on racial issues to Obama’s presidency. The analysis points to the 2009 arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., when Obama said Cambridge police “acted stupidly” despite “not seeing all the facts.”

In 2012, following the shooting of Trayvon Martin, Obama said, “If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon.” After the 2014 shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, Obama called the ensuing riots “understandable” and suggested “the law too often feels like it’s being applied in a discriminatory fashion,” according to the outlet. The Federalist credits the Ferguson incident with helping launch the Black Lives Matter movement.

Continued Popularity Among Democrats

The analysis cites polling data to support its argument that Democrats do not view Obama as insufficiently progressive. According to a June 2026 CNN poll referenced in the piece, nearly 90 percent of self-described liberals viewed Obama favorably, while 96 percent of Democrats held favorable views—one point higher than when he left office.

“Put another way, Democrats don’t see him as too moderate or not radical enough,” The Federalist states.

Recent Public Appearance Sparks Debate

The piece was prompted in part by recent viral footage of Obama’s friendly interaction with WNBA star Caitlin Clark. “You’re fantastic!” Obama told Clark. “Don’t let all this nonsense get you down.” The exchange came amid controversy over a USA Today op-ed that The Federalist characterizes as accusing Clark of sparking “racial lynching-level violence” by complaining about referees’ foul calls.

While acknowledging Obama’s “warmth” in the Clark interaction demonstrated effective political skills, The Federalist argues that such campaign-trail moments don’t negate his broader policy record and political influence.

The outlet concludes that Democrats “didn’t need” newer Democratic Socialist-aligned politicians “to help them nix constitutional rights during Covid, declare that men are women, and open America’s borders, often in an effort to replicate Obama’s political success.”
