The sole holdout juror in the Lindsay Clancy trial has become the target of death threats and harassment for refusing to find Clancy not guilty by reason of insanity, according to his attorney, as a fundraiser launched on his behalf has now surpassed $300,000.
The juror was identified as 48-year-old Michael P. Desronvil, who broke with the other 11 jurors as the panel tried to reach a unanimous verdict in the closely watched Massachusetts case, the New York Post reported Saturday. The disagreement ultimately forced the judge to declare a mistrial.
Desronvil’s lawyer, Edward Paltzik, said the money raised will be used “to cover necessities in the wake of the death threats, doxxing, and harassment by the lunatic mob that he has so courageously withstood.”
The case has drawn national attention since Clancy, 36, admitted to strangling her three children — five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and eight-month-old Callan — at the family’s home. Clancy has claimed she was suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings, while prosecutors have argued the murders were planned.
A mistrial was declared after the jury deadlocked, AFP reported on September 4.
What Happened the Night of the Killings
According to the Associated Press, Clancy strangled the children with exercise bands in the basement of their home and then jumped from a second-floor window. She remains paralyzed from the waist down as a result of the fall.
Her defense team says she heard a voice instructing her to kill the children so that she could then end her own life. Prosecutors, by contrast, argue that Clancy deliberately sent her then-husband out on errands to clear the house before the killings, and they have questioned how serious her suicide attempt actually was.
Clancy is currently being held at Tewksbury State Hospital in Massachusetts while prosecutors determine their next move. Early reports indicate the district attorney intends to seek a retrial in the coming months.
The Holdout Juror’s Position
Desronvil said in recent comments that he concluded Clancy was guilty after weighing the evidence presented at trial, and that he believed she knew what she was doing at the time of the killings. He also said his fellow jurors behaved like “activists,” Breitbart News reported.
Eleven jurors reportedly favored a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity, leaving Desronvil as the lone dissenter and preventing the unanimity required for a verdict.
The case has also generated an unusual outpouring of public sympathy for Clancy. According to Breitbart News, thousands of women have expressed support for her and argued she should not be held accountable for her actions.
A Case That Has Divided Public Opinion
The split within the jury mirrors a broader divide outside the courtroom. Supporters of Clancy have framed her actions as the product of a severe psychiatric condition, while critics contend the evidence points to a deliberate plan carried out over a period of time.
The mistrial leaves the case unresolved. Prosecutors now face a decision about whether to retry Clancy on the same charges, a process that would likely reignite the intense public interest that surrounded the first trial.
For his part, Desronvil has said he remains confident in his conclusion but has had to contend with the personal fallout, which his attorney says includes threats serious enough to require security and other basic expenses. The fundraiser set up to assist him continues to grow.
Neither the prosecutor’s office nor Clancy’s defense team has announced a final decision on a retrial timeline.
