Nearly eight months after Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC correspondent Savannah Guthrie, disappeared from her Tucson-area home, investigators say they are reviewing yet another possible ransom note linked to the case β the third such letter to surface publicly.
According to Breitbart News, a spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed in a statement released during the early morning hours of Tuesday that the PCSD/FBI Guthrie Task Force was recently made aware of the new possible note. The department added that investigators are also aware of social media comments regarding the letter and are working to determine whether the information is credible.
The sheriff’s department has been leading the investigation alongside the FBI since Nancy Guthrie was forcibly taken from her home on February 1.
A Pattern of Notes β and a Warning to Be Cautious
This latest letter, whatever its authenticity turns out to be, marks the third piece of ransom-related correspondence tied to the investigation to reach the FBI.
Two ransom notes emerged shortly after the abduction, and authorities released their full text in July. The first demanded $4 million. The second claimed the 84-year-old had died and then offered an apology.
The circumstances surrounding the earlier notes have been unusual. As Breitbart News reported earlier this month, a California man was sentenced for penning a fake ransom note in the kidnapping case after pleading guilty.
A Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson also told 13 News that there is “some skepticism” about the validity of the third ransom note. Police have not released its contents.
Why One Earlier Letter Drew Attention
At least one of the notes made public in July contained details that suggested it could be authentic. The letter referenced precise features of Nancy Guthrie’s home β including a smashed backyard floodlight and a white smartwatch on her bedroom floor.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has said investigators chose to release the notes last summer in hopes that someone would recognize the writer’s distinctive wording, phrasing or style.
It remains unknown whether Nancy Guthrie is alive, even though one earlier ransom note claimed she had died. Should the new note prove genuine, it could be a sign that the 84-year-old is still alive.
The Guthrie family has not publicly commented on reports of the third possible ransom note. The family continues to offer up to $1 million for information leading to Nancy’s recovery.
According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, the search for the octogenarian continues.
