Counterterrorism police in London have arrested a 25-year-old dual national in connection with a suspected plot against RAF Fairford, the air base the US uses to launch strikes on Iran.

UK Arrests Dual Iran-UK National Over Alleged Terror Plot at US Bomber Base

British counterterrorism police arrested a 25-year-old dual U.K.-Iranian national in central London on Thursday, the latest development in an investigation into a suspected terror plot targeting an air base used by American bombers flying missions against Iran.

The man was detained in Westminster “on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts,” according to police statements reported by The New York Post. The arrest is tied to an incident near Royal Air Force Fairford in Gloucestershire, roughly 90 miles west of London, that unfolded the previous Sunday.

The investigation has already produced five arrests on Sunday, all of them British men, who were subsequently released on bail without being charged. Counterterrorism officials at the time said they were examining whether a foreign state had a hand in the operation — a line of inquiry that has now sharpened considerably.

Prime Minister Points Toward Tehran

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Andy Burnham told reporters that investigators had turned up evidence pointing toward Iranian involvement. “There are strong indications that Iran played a part in what happened over the weekend at RAF Fairford,” he said. “We can confirm our belief that we believe Iran to have played a part.”

Burnham said British authorities were coordinating closely with their American counterparts. He also pushed back on criticism of the decision to release the original five suspects on bail, insisting the move did not signal the investigation was winding down.

“When it says ‘released,’ that isn’t as people might think. It’s obviously with the strictest possible bail conditions,” he said.

Iranian officials have forcefully denied any connection to the alleged plot. No suspects have been publicly identified in connection with the case.

Why Fairford Matters

RAF Fairford holds outsized strategic importance for U.S. military operations. According to The New York Post, it is the base of choice for launching American missions against Iran, largely because of its extended runway — a two-mile strip that has been reinforced to bear the weight of B-1 and B-52 bombers.

That combination of infrastructure and proximity to the Iran mission set is what ostensibly made the base a target, according to accounts of the foiled plot.

The Tip That Broke the Case Open

Details of how the alleged plot came to light have begun to emerge. A local resident — described in reports as a farmer — called authorities after observing Middle Eastern men running away from utility vans that lacked proper phone numbers on them. That call set off the initial wave of arrests.

A separate report from The Times of London suggested one of the suspects had themselves phoned police, which led to the first five arrests on Sunday. The accounts are not necessarily in conflict, but they offer differing pictures of how the investigation began.

The arrest of the dual national on Thursday suggests the inquiry is widening rather than closing. Whether prosecutors will bring charges — and against whom — remains an open question. British authorities have not indicated whether they believe the suspect arrested this week was a planner, a facilitator, or played some other role.

A Diplomatic Fault Line

The case lands at a delicate moment. Britain and the United States are both engaged in military operations tied to Iran, and the allegation of direct Iranian involvement in a plot on British soil — if substantiated — would mark a significant escalation in an already volatile standoff.</n

Burnham’s language stopped short of formally accusing Tehran of state-sponsored terrorism. But his phrasing — “strong indications” and a stated “belief” — signaled that London is preparing the public for that possibility while leaving the investigation room to run.

For now, the dual national remains in custody, and the five British men who were arrested and released on bail remain under the strictest conditions, according to the prime minister. The farmer who made the initial call has not been publicly identified, nor have the vans, the utility company, or the nature of the alleged plot been described in detail by officials.

The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed against the suspect arrested Thursday.
