John Kennedy Says He’s ‘Thinking About’ a 2028 Run — But Only If the GOP Field Fills With ‘Goobers’

The Louisiana Republican told NBC's Meet the Press he's focused on reelection to the Senate, but left the door open to a White House bid if he decides his party's field is weak.

John Kennedy Says He's 'Thinking About' a 2028 Run — But Only If the GOP Field Fills With 'Goobers'

Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) said Sunday he is weighing a run for the White House in 2028, though he made clear he has not decided anything and remains focused on keeping his Senate seat.

Appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Kennedy was asked by host Kristen Welker whether he is considering a presidential campaign, given the steadily growing list of potential 2028 contenders and his own travel to early-voting states like New Hampshire.

“My plans right now are to run for reelection,” Kennedy said, according to a clip flagged by Breitbart News. “But as I’ve said before, if I don’t think I can be effective in the Senate anymore, I would consider it.”

The Louisiana senator then reached for a country-music reference to describe his openness to the idea, quoting the Judds: “What’s the old Judds song, ‘Why not me on a rainy day? Why not me to love your blues away?'” He quickly added, “But I haven’t made a decision.”
