The NFL is reviewing an on-field incident from Sunday’s Vikings-Dolphins game in which referee Adrian Hill was knocked to the ground and then erupted at Minnesota linebacker Eric Wilson, according to ESPN.
The collision happened in the first quarter of the Vikings’ 15-10 win over Miami. On a third-down play that had already been blown dead for an offside penalty, Dolphins running back Ollie Gordon II shoved Wilson. The linebacker stumbled sideways and collided with Hill, sending the official to the turf.
Hill was not injured. But he was visibly furious when he scrambled back to his feet, and the moment quickly circulated online as a clip of the referee appearing to snap at Wilson.
Wilson: ‘That Was Funny, Honestly’
Speaking after the game, Wilson downplayed the confrontation and said the two men resolved it on the spot.
“That was funny, honestly,” Wilson said. “I ended up apologizing to him and explained the situation. He was cool about it. He understood what was going on. He just said he didn’t want us fighting, me and [Gordon]. He said he was just trying to break us up.”
By Wilson’s account, Hill’s anger was aimed less at the linebacker personally than at the scuffle that put him on the ground in the first place. The referee told Wilson he was only trying to separate him from Gordon.
The league has not announced any discipline, and the review may amount to little. NFL rules call for a player to be ejected for “unnecessary physical conduct with a game official,” but Wilson was not tossed from Sunday’s game, which suggests the league is unlikely to hand down punishment now.
A Win Soured by a Sideshow
Minnesota’s five-point victory over Miami was otherwise a low-scoring, mistake-heavy affair that came down to the final possession, but the referee clip overshadowed much of the postgame discussion on social media.
It is not the first time a physical run-in between a player and an official has drawn league scrutiny, and the NFL has historically treated contact with referees as a serious matter — even when the contact is accidental. That context is part of why the league is reviewing the play, and why Hill’s reaction drew so much attention.
For his part, Wilson sounded unbothered. He said the exchange was settled within moments and that Hill took his apology in stride.
Whether the NFL’s review produces anything more than a formality remains to be seen. Given that Wilson stayed in the game and that Hill was uninjured, the most likely outcome is no further action.
