Raskin Says Democrats Will Subpoena Trump Family If They Win Back Congress

Rep. Jamie Raskin told CNN that Democrats will use subpoena power to investigate what he calls corruption, including foreign payments to the Trump family, once they regain power.

Raskin Says Democrats Will Subpoena Trump Family If They Win Back Congress

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) said Monday that if Democrats win back majorities in the midterm elections, they will subpoena the Trump family as part of a sweeping investigation into what he described as corruption within the executive branch. Raskin made the comments during an appearance on CNN’s “The Arena,” according to Breitbart News.

Asked by host Kasie Hunt what his top priorities would be as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee — a position he is in line for if Democrats take the House — and who his first subpoena would target, Raskin did not name a specific individual but made clear the Trump family would be a focus.

“Well, you know, with 30 days to go before the election, we probably have 30 more scandals and episodes of corruption. They’re about to erupt,” Raskin said. “So I can’t give you a precise ranking. But look, we’re investigating all of the corruption, the pay-to-play pardons that have essentially been for sale, where $1.7 billion was forgiven to criminals who were let out of jail, that they were supposed to pay back to their victims or pay back to the taxpayers in the rip offs. That’s something we’re looking at.”

Raskin also pointed to government contracting fraud and foreign financial entanglements involving the Trump family as areas of interest for Democrats should they regain the majority.

Focus on Foreign Payments and Contracting

“We’re looking at all of the government contracting fraud that’s taking place, and the fact that the Trump family is making hundreds of millions, billions of dollars from contractors, from foreign government contracts from Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, from Qatar, the $400 million jet from Qatar,” Raskin said. “So, look, they’ve turned the entire executive branch of government into a money-making operation.”

He added that Democrats have been attempting to document what he called corruption without subpoena power and would be in a stronger position to act if they win control of Congress.

“And we’re going to expose every facet of the corruption,” Raskin said. “We’ve been trying to document it the best we can without the subpoena power, we will be in a much stronger position to go after it and to stop it once we get back into power.”

The remarks come as the midterm elections approach, with control of both chambers of Congress at stake. Raskin, a former lead impeachment manager during President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial, has been a frequent critic of the administration and has signaled that congressional oversight would intensify under a Democratic majority.

Raskin’s comments echo previous statements from Democratic leaders who have vowed to investigate various aspects of the Trump administration and the president’s business dealings if they win in November. The White House has previously dismissed such oversight threats as partisan political theater.

Breitbart News reported on Raskin’s appearance, noting his assertion that Democrats would subpoena the Trump family once back in power. The congressman did not specify which family members might be subpoenaed or what specific information Democrats would seek.

The interview highlights the high stakes of the upcoming midterms, with both parties framing the election as a pivotal moment for the direction of the country. Democrats have made oversight and accountability central to their campaign messaging, while Republicans have accused them of focusing on investigations rather than addressing issues like inflation, immigration, and crime.

Raskin’s promise to use subpoena power against the Trump family is likely to energize Democratic donors and activists who have long called for aggressive scrutiny of the former president and his business empire. It also provides Republicans with fresh material to argue that Democrats are more interested in pursuing political vendettas than in governing.

During the interview, Raskin also mentioned a range of other potential investigative targets, including pay-to-play pardons and government contracting fraud. He claimed that $1.7 billion was forgiven to criminals who were released from jail and were supposed to repay victims or taxpayers. It was not immediately clear what specific cases he was referencing, and his office did not provide additional details.

The congressman’s comments about foreign government contracts and a $400 million jet from Qatar appear to reference recent reporting on Trump family business dealings with Middle Eastern governments. Those dealings have drawn scrutiny from congressional Democrats, who have requested documents and briefings on the matter.

With less than a month until Election Day, Raskin’s remarks are likely to become part of the broader political debate over the role of congressional oversight. Democrats need to flip a handful of seats to win back the House and are defending a narrow Senate majority. Polls show competitive races across the country, with control of Congress hanging in the balance.

Raskin’s appearance on CNN is part of a broader media push by Democratic lawmakers to outline their agenda should they win in November. The congressman has been a prominent voice in the party on oversight matters and is expected to play a leading role in any investigations if Democrats take the gavel.

For now, Raskin’s message is clear: a Democratic majority would mean subpoenas and hearings targeting the Trump family and its business interests. Whether that message resonates with voters will be determined at the ballot box in just over four weeks.
