Apple News did not promote any of the 78 published stories about the Democratic National Committee’s shaky finances during the first nine months of 2026, according to an analysis by the Media Research Center. The conservative media watchdog’s findings, obtained by the New York Post, contend that the curation gap persisted through September 28 — just five weeks before the midterm elections.
The DNC has been wrestling with debt for roughly a year, a story line that has generated significant coverage across major outlets. Yet none of those pieces, the MRC says, cracked Apple News’ top 20 stories between January 1 and September 28.
“Apple isn’t curating the news,” MRC President David Bozell said in a statement. “It’s running a high-tech protection racket for the political left.”
Outlets Left Out
The study identified at least 14 debt-related stories from news organizations that Apple News typically promotes — including USA Today, The Guardian, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and Politico — that were likewise absent from the platform’s prominent placements, according to the Post.
Bozell told the Post that the pattern went beyond the DNC debt coverage. “Our study found Apple News suppressing coverage of the Democratic Party’s fundraising woes while eagerly serving up stories damaging to Republicans,” he said.
The stakes for publishers are considerable. According to the MRC, stories that Apple News chooses to feature can draw anywhere between 1 million and 20 million page views — traffic that can shape how broadly a political narrative reaches mainstream audiences.
Apple News differs from some competitors in how it assembles that lineup. The service relies on human editors to select many of the stories it highlights, rather than depending heavily on algorithms the way Google News and Microsoft’s MSN do. That editorial structure is central to the MRC’s criticism: the group argues that the omissions reflect deliberate choices rather than automated oversights.
A Party in the Red
The financial picture at the DNC has been grim for some time. Late last year, the committee blamed its nearly $16 million debt on the failed 2024 Biden-Harris campaign. Kamala Harris’ presidential bid reportedly spent around $1.5 billion before it ended.
By the conclusion of that cycle, the DNC found itself $20.5 million in the red. In October 2025, the party took out a $15 million loan to fund gubernatorial races. The New York Times reported that the committee entered 2026 carrying $17.5 million in debt. The Republican National Committee, by contrast, holds $230 million in the bank and owes nothing.
Bozell argued that the imbalance has exposed a double standard in political coverage. “For years, the media lectured Americans about ‘dirty money in politics’ whenever Republicans had the fundraising advantage,” he told the Post. “Now Democrats are facing a financial mess of their own making, and suddenly the story isn’t worth telling.”
Internal Fallout
The money problems have fueled internal unrest at the DNC. As Breitbart News has reported, the party’s financial woes have prompted calls to remove DNC Chairman Ken Martin, who has grown increasingly isolated. In one reported incident, Martin threw a phone at a junior aide’s desk out of frustration.
The MRC’s analysis lands in the final stretch of a midterm cycle where Democrats are defending a slim Senate majority and hoping to hold their ground in the House. With the RNC maintaining a massive cash advantage, the DNC’s ability to fund field operations, advertising, and get-out-the-vote efforts could be constrained.
Whether Apple News will alter its editorial approach heading into the election’s closing weeks remains unclear. The platform has not publicly responded to the MRC’s findings. The study’s release adds to a broader debate over how tech platforms curate political news — and whether human editors, when they make the calls, are accountable to anyone beyond their employers.
