California’s Democratic gubernatorial nominee Xavier Becerra on Tuesday called for a settlement in the ongoing dispute over the proposed merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery, stepping into a high-stakes standoff that could see the studio leave the state.
According to Breitbart, Becerra’s remarks mark a notable shift, coming just days after Paramount CEO David Ellison threatened to relocate the studio from California beginning October 1 unless Attorney General Rob Bonta agrees to negotiate a resolution to the merger.
“I hope it settles before court. It is easier to stand in a conference room and settle than it is to stand in a courtroom,” Becerra told Politico. “I say that having had to stand both in the conference room and in the courtroom. You get way more done in the conference room than you do in the courtroom.”
Becerra did not explicitly endorse the merger, but his comments suggest he believes a negotiated outcome is preferable to continued legal conflict. The move follows a similar call from current Governor Gavin Newsom, who has reportedly urged Bonta to make a deal.
Ellison’s Threat Carries Weight
Ellison’s threat to move Paramount is not seen as an idle bluff, according to Breitbart’s analysis. His father, Larry Ellison, relocated Oracle from California to Texas in 2020, a decision that demonstrated the family’s willingness to leave the state when conditions become untenable.
If Ellison follows through and moves Paramount, and if the merger with Warner Bros. Discovery is eventually approved, Breitbart reports that Ellison would likely take WBD with him. That combined move could cost California more than 50,000 jobs.
California has already seen major corporations depart, including Tesla, Charles Schwab, and Hewlett Packard, with high taxes, regulatory burdens, and crime cited as contributing factors. But the potential loss of two century-old legacy studios would strike at the heart of California’s identity as the entertainment capital of the world.
Political Stakes
The merger has become a political flashpoint, with Becerra and Newsom both facing pressure to resolve the standoff. Newsom, who is reportedly weighing a presidential run, is said to be concerned that losing a major studio on his watch would damage his national ambitions.
Becerra’s call for a settlement suggests he is equally aware of the political and economic consequences. By urging Bonta to come to the table, Becerra is aligning himself with the pragmatic position that a deal is better than a protracted legal fight.
What’s Really at Stake?
Breitbart’s reporting argues that the opposition to the merger is not rooted in antitrust concerns, noting that Netflix and Disney would still hold larger market shares in the entertainment industry even if Paramount and WBD combine. Instead, the outlet suggests the real issue is CNN.
Ellison has pledged to reform CNN, promising to focus on reporting facts and truth. That pledge, according to Breitbart, is what Democrats fear most, as they view CNN as a vital platform for their messaging. The outlet contends that Democrats cannot accept the possibility of CNN operating without their influence.
Whether Becerra’s call for a settlement will break the logjam remains to be seen. Bonta has not publicly responded to the pressure, and the October 1 deadline looms. But the political calculations are clear: the cost of inaction could be the loss of two iconic studios and tens of thousands of jobs.
