Military officials said Tuesday that fighter jets intercepted a civilian plane flying in restricted airspace over an event in Geneva, Ohio, where President Donald Trump was attending a youth athletic tournament.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) reported that F-16 jets used flares to alert the pilot around 6:15 p.m. ET, according to CBS News. The civilian plane had violated a temporary flight restriction (TFR) in place over the area and was safely escorted back to the ground.
“Flares are employed with the highest regard for safety, burn out quickly and completely, and pose no danger to people on the ground,” NORAD officials said.
FAA and NORAD Response
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issues temporary flight restrictions and communicates them to pilots through Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs). Both the FAA and NORAD emphasize the importance of pilots checking these notices before planning and undertaking flights.
The TFR over Geneva was put in place as President Trump traveled to the city aboard Air Force One for the 2026 Patriot Games, a youth athletic tournament.
This incident follows similar interceptions over the weekend. According to the report, fighter jets were scrambled over Bedminster, New Jersey, where one of Trump’s golf courses is located. Two general aviation planes violated temporary flight restrictions in that area on Sunday, also prompting interceptions by NORAD jets. Those planes were safely escorted from the restricted area as well.
The latest interception highlights the ongoing security measures surrounding presidential movements and the importance of adhering to temporary flight restrictions.
