UCLA Stuns Oregon 17-15 in Eugene, Forces Seven Turnovers to Enter CFP Conversation

UCLA walked into Eugene and handed No. 13 Oregon a 17-15 loss on Saturday, a result that moved the previously unranked-at-the-top No. 21 Bruins into the College Football Playoff conversation, according to reporting from Sport & State.

The Bruins (undefeated on the season) built a 17-6 fourth-quarter lead and then leaned on a defense that forced seven turnovers to hold off the Ducks’ comeback attempt. It was a defensive struggle between the two former Pac-12 programs that now compete in the Big Ten.

Running back Wayne Knight carried the load offensively, finishing with 103 rushing yards and a touchdown on 22 carries, and also caught what proved to be the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter. Oregon’s late push fell short as UCLA’s defense kept coming up with the ball.

A turnaround in Pasadena

The win is the latest evidence of a rapid rebuild under new head coach Bob Chesney. UCLA went 3-9 last season, and Chesney has already surpassed that win total in dominant fashion. Entering Saturday’s game, the Bruins owned the nation’s sixth-best offense and the fourth-most rushing yards per game.

Chesney arrived in Pasadena after a two-year run at James Madison, where he went 21-6 and took the Dukes to a College Football Playoff appearance in 2025 — a game they lost to Oregon. That background has drawn inevitable comparisons to another JMU product: former Indiana coach Curt Cignetti, who led the Hoosiers from the losingest program in college football history to national champions just last year. Cignetti coached at James Madison from 2019 through 2023, and in his first season at Indiana he took the Hoosiers to the playoff. Chesney’s current trajectory looks similar, per Sport & State.

When the next AP Poll is released, UCLA should make a significant jump from No. 21 after beating a top-15 opponent on the road.

A manageable path — then a brutal finish

The schedule offers the Bruins a legitimate route to stay in the playoff picture deep into November. Their next five games come against Wisconsin, Michigan State, Nevada, Minnesota and Illinois before the difficulty ramps back up. To close the regular season, UCLA travels to Ann Arbor to face Michigan and then meets rival USC in back-to-back weeks.

How far the Bruins can ride this depends in part on the health of quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who left Saturday’s game early with a lower body injury after taking what Sport & State described as a cheap shot on the way out.

Still unbeaten and now armed with a signature road victory, Chesney and the Bruins have officially entered the College Football Playoff conversation.
