Ossoff: Trump’s Iran War ‘Based on Lies’

Sen. Jon Ossoff accused the Trump administration of basing its military action in Iran on false claims, calling the ongoing conflict 'a complete fiasco' and a 'catastrophic failure' by the president and his national security team.

Ossoff: Trump's Iran War 'Based on Lies'

Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) on Wednesday delivered a blistering critique of the Trump administration’s military campaign in Iran, asserting that the entire conflict is “based on lies” and accusing the president and his national security team of catastrophic mismanagement.

Speaking on MSNBC’s “The Briefing,” Ossoff addressed the reported threat to Air Force One in Turkey, suggesting that the administration’s own operational failures may have contributed to the danger. “If there was a threat to the president, it’s quite reasonable for the public and the Congress to ask whether the poor operational security at this White House may have contributed to it,” he said.

The Georgia Democrat, who sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee, took aim at what he described as a pattern of deception leading up to and during the conflict. “I think we have to step back and recognize that this entire war is based on lies,” Ossoff said. “They told us last year that the Iranian nuclear threat was obliterated. Then they told us earlier this year that there was an imminent nuclear threat. Both times lies.”

Ossoff’s remarks come as the war enters what he characterized as an indefinite and costly phase, despite earlier administration declarations of success. “On day four of this war, President Trump declared victory months ago. Secretary Hegseth said that all of our objectives had been achieved,” he noted. “The war continues. Iran still has its uranium. Hormuz remains closed. This is a complete fiasco.”

The senator did not spare the administration’s leadership, calling the situation “a catastrophic failure by the commander in chief personally and his entire national security team.”

At the same time, Ossoff took care to express support for U.S. service members involved in the operations. “I want to express, on behalf of everybody in Georgia, our deep gratitude and appreciation for the sailors and the naval aviators from the Marines who are deployed and who are putting their lives on the line in service to the United States,” he said.

Ossoff’s comments reflect deepening Democratic criticism of the administration’s handling of Iran policy, which has shifted dramatically over the past year from claims of a destroyed nuclear program to warnings of an imminent threat that justified military action. Critics have repeatedly challenged the administration’s shifting rationales, and Ossoff’s charge of lying is among the most direct yet from a sitting senator.

The White House has not yet responded to Ossoff’s remarks. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth previously announced that all U.S. objectives had been achieved, but the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s retained uranium stockpile contradict that claim, according to Ossoff.

The war has drawn widespread international concern, particularly over the economic impact of Hormuz’s closure on global oil shipments. The strait is a vital chokepoint for about one-fifth of the world’s petroleum consumption.

Ossoff’s pointed attack is likely to intensify the political battle over the conflict in Congress, where Democrats have been pressing for more oversight and a clearer strategy. His reference to “lies” is expected to reverberate in upcoming hearings and campaign trail messaging.

As the war grinds on, the gap between the administration’s early promises of quick victory and the current reality has become a central theme for critics. Ossoff’s assertion that the war is “based on lies” encapsulates a broader Democratic argument that the public was misled into supporting a conflict that has not delivered on its stated goals.

For now, the administration faces the dual challenge of managing a still-unresolved military situation while defending its credibility at home—a task made more difficult by senators like Ossoff who are not shy about calling out what they see as fundamental deceptions.
