DOJ Reportedly Wants Omar’s DNA to Build Immigration Fraud Case

Federal prosecutors are said to be seeking DNA evidence to bolster decade-old allegations that Rep. Ilhan Omar committed immigration fraud, including a claim she married her brother in 2009.

DOJ Reportedly Wants Omar's DNA to Build Immigration Fraud Case

Federal investigators are reportedly working to use DNA evidence to substantiate long-standing allegations that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) committed immigration fraud, according to a New York Post report citing people familiar with the matter.

The DNA was collected at the Somalia-born congresswoman’s Washington, D.C., residence, sources told the Post, and prosecutors with the Department of Justice are hoping it will help prove the fraud allegations as part of a broader criminal investigation into Omar.

A Years-Long Probe Built on Records and Whistleblowers

The investigation has reportedly been underway for years. People familiar with it told the Post that federal authorities have drawn on whistleblowers and government records alongside the newly obtained DNA material in an effort to substantiate allegations dating back roughly a decade that Omar — and possibly family members, including her father — defrauded immigration authorities.

One source told the Post that the DNA evidence is seen as critical to proving a specific allegation: that Omar married her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, in 2009 in order to help him obtain a green card. According to that source, the green card never materialized.

The allegation that Omar married her brother to aid his immigration process has circulated for years and has been repeatedly denied by the congresswoman. Neither the Post nor Breitbart reported any formal charges or findings, and no court has substantiated the claim.

ICE Scrutiny Preceded Raid, Report Says

The Post report follows separate reporting by NewsNation detailing how Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents had been examining Omar for months before a raid last week. According to that account, ICE agents met in January with Scott Johnson of Powerline Blog, one of the earliest online outlets to publish allegations of immigration fraud against Omar — including the claim that she married her brother to speed his path to naturalized citizenship.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro has also disclosed that her office opened a financial investigation into the congresswoman, running alongside the immigration probe. The Biden administration had previously examined Omar’s finances after reporting on her multimillion-dollar net worth.

What’s Established — and What Isn’t

The allegations at the center of the reported DNA effort remain allegations. The Post’s sourcing is anonymous, and the reporting does not describe what specific genetic material was collected, how it was obtained, or what it would be compared against. It also does not indicate whether prosecutors have convened a grand jury or are preparing charges.

Omar, first elected in 2018, has been a frequent target of conservative criticism and has faced previous investigations that did not result in charges related to the marriage allegation. The renewed focus on DNA evidence, if accurate, would mark a significant escalation in a probe that has now stretched across multiple administrations and multiple agencies, including ICE and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Representatives for Omar have not publicly responded to the Post’s reporting in the outlet’s account. The Department of Justice and ICE have likewise not confirmed the details described by anonymous sources.

The reporting lands as Omar remains a prominent figure in Democratic politics and a regular foil for Republicans in Congress, where she has served since flipping a Minneapolis-area seat. Any formal charges would immediately reshape the political landscape around her, but for now the story rests on anonymous sourcing describing evidence prosecutors reportedly hope to use — not on evidence that has been tested in court.
