Texas Deputy Adam Sherifi Killed in Shootout Serving Felony Warrant; Wife Gave Birth Last Month

A Texas sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed Tuesday night while helping local police serve a felony warrant, according to the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Adam Sherifi died after being struck by gunfire during a shootout at a residence near Canton, Breitbart News reported.

Van Zandt County Sheriff Kevin Bridger said the deputy was assisting the Canton Police Department in trying to apprehend a man who had outstanding warrants for aggravated assault and aggravated assault on a peace officer, according to KLTV. The man opened fire on Sherifi and Canton police officers from inside the house, touching off an exchange of gunfire.

Both officers wounded, one fatally

Sherifi and a Canton police officer were both hit. The officers were taken to a hospital for treatment, but Sherifi’s wounds proved fatal. No further information about the condition of the wounded Canton officer was included in the initial reporting.

Bridger said the man authorities were seeking was later found dead inside the residence from a gunshot wound. The sheriff did not say whether the wound was self-inflicted or whether one of the rounds fired by law enforcement killed him. That detail remains under investigation.

A wife and three children, including a newborn

KFDM reported that Sherifi leaves behind his wife and three children, one of whom was born in September — making the deputy a new father just weeks before his death.

Malakoff Mayor Nicole Mason-Driver, a Democrat, offered condolences in a statement, saying she was praying that God would surround Sherifi’s wife and children with comfort, strength, and love in the difficult days ahead, and that they would find support in the people around them and peace in the memories they will hold.

Outpouring from the law enforcement community

The death marks another loss for a rural East Texas county, where sheriff’s deputies and small municipal departments routinely work together on warrants and call-outs. Van Zandt County, roughly an hour southeast of Dallas, is home to Canton and its well-known First Monday Trade Days. The shooting has drawn attention from across the state, with the deputy’s name circulating online under calls to “say his name” as a way of honoring officers killed in the line of duty.

Details about funeral arrangements and memorial services were not immediately available in the initial reporting. The investigation into the shooting is continuing, and authorities have not released the identity of the man found dead inside the home.

The incident also underscores the risks officers face when serving warrants on suspects with prior charges of violence against police. According to the initial reports, the man sought Tuesday night had already been accused of aggravated assault on a peace officer before the confrontation that killed Sherifi.

Sheriff Bridger’s office has not announced additional details about the sequence of events inside the residence or how many rounds were exchanged.
