Two prominent television directors are facing backlash after openly admitting they would refuse to work on HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series because of J.K. Rowling’s views on transgender issues—a stance critics are comparing to the McCarthy-era blacklist.
Ally Pankiw, a director known for work on Black Mirror, posted on Instagram that she replied “Absolutely fucking not!” when asked if she wanted to be considered for the series. Her agent, described as a “fascist WME agent” in the report, allegedly responded: “Of course 🙂 I assumed as much (And agree).”
Kate Herron, who directed the first season of Loki for Disney+, jumped into Pankiw’s comments to admit she had also declined the project. “They’ve asked me twice and I’ve had to explain my answer is never gonna change from a no,” Herron wrote, according to the report.
Pankiw explained her decision by saying, “It simply is this easy to say no to funding transphobia!”
Blacklist Comparisons
Conservative commentator John Nolte, writing for Breitbart News, argues that these admissions prove the 1950s political blacklist is alive and well in Hollywood. He notes that the historical blacklist was not government-imposed but was driven by studios, producers, agents, and directors who refused to work with people over political differences.
“There is no difference between the blacklist of the 1950s and today’s leftwing blacklist,” Nolte wrote. He points out that Rowling has faced professional consequences for her views on gender identity, despite her statements being framed by supporters as concerns about women’s rights and child safety.
The controversy centers on Rowling’s long-running public positions on transgender issues, which she has defended as protecting women’s spaces and children. Her critics, including Pankiw and Herron, view her stance as transphobic and harmful.
Nolte’s column goes further, alleging that by opposing Rowling, the directors are implicitly endorsing a range of positions he describes as “depraved,” including “child grooming,” “queering little kids,” and allowing men into women’s prisons. He writes that Rowling’s actual view is “live and let live” toward transgender people, and that she only opposes what he calls “the blatant evil” of gender ideology.
The Breitbart piece, titled “Nolte: ‘Loki’ and ‘Black Mirror’ Directors Admit They Are McCarthyite Blacklisters,” is a strongly opinionated column rather than a neutral news report. It accuses the directors of being “monstrous harpies” and says Hollywood is “propping up” people with “the most depraved opinions imaginable, especially towards children.”
Nolte, who describes himself as a rare conservative who spent three decades rooting for Hollywood’s success, says he now wants the industry to fail. “Then Hollywood began its obscene targeting of our kids. Now I root for the whole thing to die,” he wrote. “There is no reforming this kind of evil.”
Context of the Harry Potter Series
HBO is developing a television adaptation of the Harry Potter books, announced in 2023. The series has been a flashpoint for controversy given Rowling’s involvement as executive producer and her polarizing public statements.
The casting calls for the series have also drawn scrutiny, with HBO insisting on “young, talented, diverse” actors and saying it would not discriminate based on ethnicity or gender identity. Rowling has been vocal in her opposition to transgender women being recognized as female, a position that has made her both a hero to some feminists and a target for LGBTQ advocates.
The directors’ refusal to work on the project is the latest example of Hollywood creatives drawing lines over Rowling’s views. Several actors from the original films, including Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, have publicly disagreed with Rowling, while some have also said they would not work with her again.
The incident raises broader questions about whether refusing to work with someone over their political views constitutes a modern-day blacklist or is simply an exercise of personal conscience. Supporters of Pankiw and Herron would likely frame their decisions as a moral stand against transphobia, while critics like Nolte see it as an illiberal purge of dissenting voices.
Neither Pankiw nor Herron has publicly commented on the Breitbart article directly, but their Instagram posts remain visible, according to the report.
The debate shows no signs of cooling, with the Harry Potter series still in pre-production and Rowling’s influence on the project expected to remain a lightning rod.
