Fetterman Slams Poll Showing 58% of Democrats View Socialism Positively: 'This Is Lunacy'

Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) is pushing back against his own party’s shifting economic views, calling a new poll that shows a majority of Democrats view socialism positively “lunacy.”

In a post on X, Fetterman responded to a CBS News/YouGov survey that found 58 percent of Democrats hold a positive view of socialism, while just 32 percent view capitalism positively. He warned that the Democratic Party is “becoming the party of socialism.”

“The Democratic Party is becoming the party of socialism,” Fetterman wrote. “58% view socialism positively. 50% have a negative view of capitalism. I’m a proud free market capitalist. This is lunacy.”

Fetterman’s comments come as the party continues to debate its economic identity, with progressive voices pushing for more government intervention while moderates like Fetterman argue for a more market-friendly approach.

The poll, conducted between August 12 and August 14, surveyed 2,287 U.S. adults. Overall, 35 percent of respondents said they had a positive view of socialism, while 46 percent had a positive view of capitalism. Among all respondents, 42 percent viewed socialism negatively, while 33 percent viewed capitalism negatively.

Among Democrats specifically, only 18 percent had a negative view of socialism, and 50 percent had a negative view of capitalism.

Fetterman, who has often broken with his party’s progressive wing on issues like immigration and crime, also expressed concern about the party’s direction in an interview with Fox News Digital, calling it “troubling.” He specifically took aim at Democrats who elevate figures with extreme left-wing views, saying he would never try to elevate a communist.

“I would never try to elevate… a communist just because [he] has followers on some, on Twitch, whatever that is,” Fetterman said, referring to a left-wing streamer. “But overall, if you identify with a communist who praises Mao and Cuba and for these places, that should be foreign to any Democrat.”

Fetterman’s remarks drew a quick response from Republicans, including Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), who invited Fetterman to join the GOP.

“John, please join us,” Lee wrote on X. “We’re not socialist. And we don’t bite.”

Fetterman has not indicated any intention to switch parties, but his increasing criticism of his own party’s direction has made him a frequent target of progressives and a rare ally for some conservatives on certain issues.

The CBS News/YouGov survey highlights a broader generational and ideological divide within the Democratic Party, as younger voters often hold more favorable views of socialism than older cohorts. However, Fetterman’s blunt dismissal of socialism reflects a long-standing strain of Democratic thought that embraces free markets and capitalism.

“I’m a proud free market capitalist,” Fetterman wrote, making clear he sees the party’s drift toward socialism as a political liability.

Fetterman’s comments also come amid ongoing debates over economic policy in Washington, from the inflation response to the future of entitlement programs. His willingness to openly challenge his party’s base could signal a wider moderate backlash within the party as it prepares for the 2028 election cycle.

For now, Fetterman appears content to remain a voice of dissent within his party, calling out what he sees as dangerously un-American views among some of his colleagues.
