Actress Hayden Panettiere, who rose to fame as the indestructible cheerleader Claire Bennet on NBC’s “Heroes” and later starred in the country-music drama “Nashville,” has died at the age of 36. The news was confirmed on Sunday by her representative in a statement first provided to ABC News.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” the statement read. “She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”

No cause of death has been reported at this time.
A Career That Began in Infancy
Panettiere was born in New York to Lesley Vogel, an actress and producer, and Alan Lee “Skip” Panettiere, a retired New York City Fire Department captain. Her introduction to performing came remarkably early — at just 11 months old, when she appeared in a commercial for Playskool toy trains.

“My introduction to acting was actually at 11 months old,” Panettiere said during a 2023 interview with Entertainment Tonight. “I don’t know if that would really be an introduction to acting, because I don’t think acting was involved at that point. I didn’t have lines, I was just playing.”
From there, she landed guest roles on soap operas and shows like “Law & Order: SVU,” but her breakout came when she was cast as Claire Bennet on “Heroes,” which ran from 2006 to 2010. The role made her a household name and a fixture of the superhero genre’s rise on television.

After “Heroes” ended, Panettiere found another hit with “Nashville,” which aired from 2012 to 2018 and showcased her acting and singing talents.
Personal Struggles and Recent Losses
In recent years, Panettiere had been candid about her battles with substance abuse and postpartum depression. She released her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” in May of this year, in which she opened up about those challenges.
Her personal life also included a long on-and-off relationship with heavyweight boxer Wladimir Klitschko, spanning 2009-2011 and again from 2013-2018. The couple had a daughter, Kaya, born in 2014.
The actress also faced tragedy in 2023 when her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, died at age 28 due to cardiomegaly — an enlarged heart — and aortic valve complications.
As news of her death circulates, fans and colleagues are remembering Panettiere not only for her on-screen work but for the warmth and resilience she showed despite her personal struggles. Her representative’s statement captured that sentiment: she was “an incredible light” who brought joy to those who knew her and to millions of viewers.
