Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow delivered sharp criticism of fellow Democrat Rep. Haley Stevens on Sunday, characterizing Stevens’ endorsement of Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers as a “sad, desperate” betrayal of Michigan voters with only days remaining before the election.
Speaking on MSNBC’s “The Assignment,” McMorrow told host Antonia Hylton that the news of Stevens’ Republican endorsement broke just before a Sunday church service she was attending with constituents and fellow Democratic lawmakers including Congressman Jim Clyburn and Rep. Debbie Dingell.
“It is just a sad, desperate attempt to be relevant when we’ve got a couple of days in this election left,” McMorrow said of Stevens’ endorsement decision.
Healthcare and Economic Concerns at Stake
McMorrow pivoted from the political drama to what she described as the real issues facing Michigan voters. According to the state senator, her office has seen an uptick in calls from constituents facing eviction, and she cited a figure of 200,000 Michiganders at risk of losing healthcare coverage.
“That is what is driving people out to the polls,” McMorrow emphasized. “So to have Haley abandon Michiganders and her constituents, is deeply, deeply sad.”
The Democratic state senator framed Stevens’ endorsement as a distraction from the party’s core mission in the final stretch of the campaign. “I know the rest of us are focused on getting to work, getting out the vote, making sure people know that Mike Rogers is a threat to democracy, a threat to Michiganders,” she said.
Personal History and Pattern of Behavior
McMorrow went further, suggesting that Stevens’ decision reflects a long-standing behavioral pattern that some Democratic colleagues have observed but that is only now becoming public knowledge.
“A lot of us who have known Hailey Stephens for a long time—this is how she operates behind the scenes. If she doesn’t get her way, she threatens people, and people are finally starting to see who she is,” McMorrow claimed. “And Michiganders deserve so much better. We’ve got to reject this.”
The endorsement controversy erupts at a critical juncture in Michigan’s Senate race, with both parties mobilizing voters in what is expected to be a closely contested battle. The state has emerged as a key battleground in determining Senate control, making internal Democratic divisions all the more significant.
Stevens’ decision to cross party lines and endorse the Republican candidate represents an unusual move that could complicate Democratic efforts to maintain party unity during the final push to Election Day. McMorrow’s public rebuke signals that Stevens’ endorsement has created immediate friction within Michigan’s Democratic establishment.
McMorrow’s comments underscore the high stakes Democrats see in the race, particularly regarding issues like healthcare access and economic security for working families. With the election days away, the state senator made clear that Democrats would continue campaigning against Rogers despite the endorsement from a sitting Democratic congresswoman.
