AI Giant Anthropic Drops $900K on California Democrats Days Before Midterms

Anthropic, the artificial intelligence startup eyeing a potentially record-breaking IPO, has made substantial donations to Democratic Party committees and voter mobilization efforts in California just days ahead of the midterm elections.

AI Giant Anthropic Drops $900K on California Democrats Days Before Midterms

In a move that underscores the growing political influence of artificial intelligence companies, Anthropic has donated $900,000 to Democratic Party organizations and get-out-the-vote initiatives in California as the midterm elections approach, according to Breitbart News.

The contributions, disclosed in a Friday filing with the California Secretary of State, represent one of the most significant political expenditures by an AI company in recent memory. The timing—just days before voters head to the polls—has drawn attention to the expanding role tech firms are playing in electoral politics.

Where the Money Went

The California Democratic Party received the lion’s share of Anthropic’s donations, collecting $525,000. An independent statewide get-out-the-vote organization received $150,000, while five county-level Democratic organizations each received $45,000. The county recipients included San Francisco, San Mateo, Orange, Fresno, and Siskiyou counties.

Notably, the $45,000 contribution marks Anthropic’s only donation to the San Francisco Democratic Party during this election cycle. According to reports, the local party has been directing substantial resources toward competitive state Senate races outside the city limits.

Robin Swanson, a spokeswoman for the California Democratic Party, told the San Francisco Standard that the funds will “help us elect Democrats up and down the ballot, defeat the Trump-backed Prop. 39, and continue our robust voter-protection programs across the state.”

The Stakes Behind the Donations

Anthropic’s political engagement comes as the company approaches what could be a record-breaking initial public offering. The IPO is expected to enrich prominent backers including Eric Schmidt, the former Google executive who has become a major investor in artificial intelligence ventures.

Beyond individual wealth creation, the company’s success is poised to generate a substantial cohort of wealthy adherents to Effective Altruism, a philosophical and social movement that uses evidence and reasoning to determine the most effective ways to benefit others. Many key figures in the AI industry have aligned themselves with EA principles.

Broader Concerns About AI’s Political Power

The donations arrive amid growing concerns about the political influence AI companies could wield as they become more deeply embedded in how people access and consume information. Conservative groups have raised alarms about the potential for artificial intelligence to consolidate control over news and information distribution.

According to Breitbart News, the Center for American Rights, a right-leaning nonprofit law firm focused on technology and telecommunications policy, recently filed an amicus brief in a copyright infringement case involving OpenAI. The brief warned of a future where AI companies could become the dominant—or even sole—source of information for the public.

“If [superintelligence] is permitted to recklessly crawl the internet, even past paywalls, then we’ve effectively stripped these smaller companies of their competitive advantage and, worse, permanently solidified these SI companies as the ultimate distributors of our information,” the brief stated.

The filing, cosigned by several conservative organizations including the Article III Project and Internet Accountability Project, both led by Mike Davis, as well as the Bull Moose Project and Consumers For A Strong Economy, described this potential outcome as “a terrifying prospect and completely at odds with the Trump Administration’s goals of protecting copyright and a diversity of viewpoints.”

The Political Battle Over AI

The concerns extend beyond mere market dominance. Critics point to what they describe as Big Tech’s track record of removing politically disfavored content, raising questions about whether AI companies with similar ideological leanings might shape information access in ways that favor certain political viewpoints.

As AI companies like Anthropic begin to exercise their political muscle through campaign contributions and other forms of engagement, the question of how these powerful entities should be regulated and monitored is becoming increasingly urgent for policymakers on both sides of the aisle.

The debate over AI’s role in politics and information distribution is expected to intensify as the technology becomes more sophisticated and more deeply integrated into daily life. With companies like Anthropic now making substantial political contributions while simultaneously developing tools that could reshape how millions of people access news and information, the intersection of artificial intelligence and electoral politics represents uncharted territory for American democracy.

As the midterm elections approach, Anthropic’s $900,000 in donations to California Democrats serves as a clear signal that AI companies are no longer content to remain on the political sidelines—and that their growing influence is likely to become a major point of contention in future policy debates.
