A University of Michigan student was arrested last week after launching a violent attack on conservative influencer Liz Benichou during a campus event, with newly released video footage capturing both the assault and the suspect’s subsequent threats while being taken into police custody.
The incident occurred during a “Liberty Under Fire USA” tour stop on the Ann Arbor campus, where the student confronted Benichou and other conservative activists who were engaging with passersby. According to Breitbart News, which reported on the incident, the confrontation escalated rapidly after Benichou questioned whether the student’s attire would be acceptable in Iran.
Sudden Escalation to Violence
Video footage shows the student responding to Benichou’s question by launching a surprise physical attack, shoving the conservative commentator to the ground. The assailant then began kicking at Benichou while she was down, but was quickly pulled away by a male bystander who intervened to stop the assault.
“Don’t fucking talk to me like that!” the student shouted as she threw down her backpack and charged at Benichou again. “You wanna fucking get over here, bitch?” she yelled, prompting a second male onlooker to step in and help restrain her.
The situation required police intervention, with an officer arriving at the scene and forcing the student to the ground to place her in handcuffs. During the arrest, the student continued to resist and taunt authorities.
Disturbing Death Threats During Arrest
“What the fuck are you going to do to me? Because I hit a dumb ass bitch in the face?” the student asked the officer who ordered her not to resist. Her defiance continued even after being handcuffed and led toward a police vehicle.
As she was being escorted away, the student shouted increasingly violent threats. “I’d do it again every fucking time, you stupid fucking cunt!” she yelled at Benichou. Moments later, she added an even more alarming statement: “I should have fucking killed you while I had the fucking chance!”
When a shocked bystander, audible off-camera, asked “Are you kidding me?” the student replied, “No, I’m not fucking kidding you!”
Earlier Confrontation on Campus
The assault was reportedly the culmination of an ongoing confrontation that began earlier when the student encountered conservative activists seated at a table on campus. The activists had displayed a sign asking, “Is Islam Compatible with the West?”
Video from that earlier interaction shows the student approaching the table and shouting, “This is fucking stupid, bro,” before clapping directly in one of the men’s faces. “Where’s your fucking permit?” she demanded during the heated exchange.
Victim Speaks Out, Vows Not to Be Silenced
Following the attack, Benichou posted a statement on X (formerly Twitter), assuring her followers that she was “OK” despite being “physically assaulted simply for showing up and exercising my First Amendment rights.”
“I am incredibly grateful to the law enforcement officers who acted immediately to protect me,” Benichou wrote. She added a defiant message to those who might seek to intimidate conservative voices on campus: “If the intention was to intimidate or silence me, it will not work.”
According to Breitbart’s reporting, Benichou identified the assailant as a supporter of Abdul El-Sayed, Michigan’s Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate. El-Sayed, a former Detroit health director and progressive activist, has not publicly commented on the incident or the alleged association.
Campus Safety and Free Speech Concerns
The incident has reignited debates about campus safety, free speech, and political tolerance at universities across the country. Conservative activists have increasingly reported hostile receptions when attempting to engage in dialogue or activism on college campuses, though violent physical assaults remain relatively rare.
The University of Michigan has not yet issued a public statement regarding the incident or any potential disciplinary actions against the student beyond the criminal charges she now faces. Campus police confirmed the arrest but declined to provide additional details about the ongoing investigation.
The case raises questions about the boundaries of political discourse and the consequences of allowing heated rhetoric to escalate into physical violence. While passionate disagreement is a hallmark of democratic debate, the transition from verbal confrontation to physical assault and death threats represents a clear crossing of legal and ethical lines.
Legal experts note that the death threat captured on video could result in additional charges beyond simple assault, potentially including terroristic threats or other enhanced offenses depending on how prosecutors choose to proceed. The student could face both criminal penalties and university disciplinary action, including possible suspension or expulsion.
As universities continue to grapple with how to balance free expression with campus safety, incidents like this one underscore the challenges facing administrators, students, and activists of all political persuasions who seek to engage in public discourse without fear of violence.
