Fidel Castro’s Grandson Posts Eerie Halloween Video About Cuba’s ‘Darkness’ While Nation Suffers Blackouts

Sandro Castro, grandson of late Cuban dictator Fidel Castro and self-described social media influencer, posted a bizarre Halloween video acknowledging the 'darkness' engulfing Cuba — a reference to the relentless power outages plaguing the island — while nine Cubans face prison for peacefully protesting those same conditions.

Fidel Castro's Grandson Posts Eerie Halloween Video About Cuba's 'Darkness' While Nation Suffers Blackouts

The grandson of former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro posted a Halloween video over the weekend that acknowledged the “darkness” consuming Cuba, referring to the chronic power outages devastating the island nation — even as his family’s regime seeks prison sentences for ordinary Cubans who peacefully protested those very conditions.

Sandro Castro, who describes himself as a “digital content creator” and “filmmaker,” published the video using an audio clip of his late grandfather while dressed as a vampire. In the unsettling production, Castro claims that “the dead rise again” on Halloween and declares that “darkness took hold of Apagonia” — his nickname for Cuba that translates to “Blackoutgonia.”

In the video, Castro is shown using an old cell phone to make a call, speaking in an eerie voice: “You know that the [distribution] transformer won’t come back to life, and the SEN [Cuban power grid] won’t return either. Darkness took hold of Apagonia. Terror has arrived.”

Mocking Crisis While Living in Luxury

The younger Castro’s “comedic” video references multiple crises facing ordinary Cubans. “Vampires with hepatitis are after you, and with dengue, too,” he says, apparently alluding to rising cases of these diseases across the island. He continues by referencing Cuba’s critical water shortage: “And forget about water, unless you become a meteorologist and it happens to be raining.”

The video concludes with Castro declaring, “Remember that today the dead rise again, and voices from the afterlife begin to be heard,” followed by audio from a May 2000 speech by Fidel Castro stating, “It means changing everything that needs to be changed.”

Sandro Castro’s lifestyle stands in stark contrast to the suffering he references in his videos. He officially owns EFE, a bar in Havana’s Vedado neighborhood that serves the regime’s elite. Members of the Castro family have consistently lived in lavish excess while ordinary Cubans have endured nearly seven decades of communist rule that has pushed the nation to the brink of collapse.

Nine Cubans Face Prison for Peaceful Protest

The timing of Castro’s video is particularly striking. According to Martí Noticias, prosecutors in Bayamó, Granma, are seeking prison sentences of up to five years for nine Cubans who peacefully protested in May 2025, demanding food and electricity for their communities during one of the island’s many blackouts.

The communist prosecutors have charged these citizens with contempt, public disorder, incitement to commit crimes, and resistance — simply for peacefully demonstrating during a power outage. Meanwhile, Sandro Castro faces no consequences for his public commentary on Cuba’s dire situation, no matter how provocative or obscene his “performances” become.

Castro Family Corruption Exposed at U.N.

Sandro Castro’s privileged lifestyle was recently highlighted by U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Mike Waltz, who last week presented a detailed exposé documenting the corruption of the ruling Castro family. The presentation sparked a chaotic response from Cuban officials at the United Nations.

Led by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Cuban “diplomats” staged what’s known in Cuba as an “act of repudiation” — a tactic the communist regime uses to shame and intimidate dissidents. The incident resulted in the expulsion of Cuban “diplomat” Richard Tur from U.S. territory after footage showed him attacking Ambassador Waltz’s spokesman J.P. Freire and attempting to grab Freire’s phone.

A Pattern of Privileged Mockery

Castro has built a social media presence around “comedic” sketches that often include mild criticism of his own family’s regime. Many of his videos reference Cuba’s infrastructure failures, frequently using his “Apagonia” nickname to acknowledge the daily blackouts that leave millions without power.

Other recent videos have featured criticism of President Donald Trump over deportation policies and parody portrayals of Trump supposedly seeking to do “business” with the Castro heir. Despite extensive evidence of his privileged position, Castro has repeatedly denied that being part of the Castro dynasty grants him any special advantages in Cuba.

As one of the more eccentric members of Cuba’s ruling family, Sandro Castro represents a new generation attempting to maintain relevance through social media while the nation they govern continues its downward spiral. His Halloween video — simultaneously acknowledging and mocking Cuba’s suffering — exemplifies the disconnect between the Castro dynasty and the Cuban people who have lived under their rule since 1959.

The contrast couldn’t be sharper: while Sandro Castro posts satirical videos about Cuba’s crumbling infrastructure from the comfort of his privileged position, ordinary Cubans who dare to peacefully protest those same conditions face years in prison.
