Disney Plans Thousands of Layoffs in Bid to Slash 20% of Annual Costs

Disney is reportedly preparing another round of layoffs, potentially the largest in 2026, as part of a cost-cutting strategy to reduce annual expenses by 20%.

Disney Plans Thousands of Layoffs in Bid to Slash 20% of Annual Costs

Disney is gearing up for another significant round of layoffs, potentially affecting thousands of employees, as part of a broader plan to cut 20% of its annual costs, according to a report from Bloomberg. The move would mark the fourth wave of job cuts in 2026 under CEO Josh D’Amaro and could be the most extensive yet.

Which Divisions Will Be Hit Hardest?

Sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that Disney’s theme parks, TV channels, and movie studio divisions are expected to bear the brunt of the layoffs. The company aims to reinvest some of the savings into film and TV production, technology upgrades, and its theme park and cruise ship businesses.

Disney has not publicly commented on the report, but the restructuring appears to be part of an ongoing effort to streamline operations. Earlier this year, the company eliminated hundreds of jobs in human resources and IT departments, followed by additional cuts at Pixar, ESPN, and Disney Entertainment Television.

A Year of Cost-Cutting Measures

Variety reports that this latest round of layoffs would be the most significant in 2026, following previous reductions in April, July, and September. In April alone, Disney cut about 1,000 positions, primarily due to the consolidation of its marketing division under Chief Marketing Officer Asad Ayaz.

The Wall Street Journal previously noted that Disney has been planning a major restructuring of its TV operations, which could eliminate hundreds more jobs and consolidate divisions. The company has also raised prices for its Disney+ and Hulu streaming services, increasing ad-free plans by $2.50 per month.

What’s Next for Disney?

While the layoffs signal a period of belt-tightening, Disney’s leadership appears focused on reinvesting in key growth areas. The company has faced challenges in recent years, including declining linear TV revenues and mixed performance in its streaming business. By cutting costs in some areas and doubling down on content and theme park investments, Disney may be positioning itself for long-term stability—but not without short-term pain for its workforce.
