Hayden Panettiere's Death: 911 Call Raises Overdose Questions, Narcan Found at Scene

The sudden death of actress Hayden Panettiere at age 36 has taken a new turn with the release of 911 audio that reportedly mentions a possible overdose. According to the Daily Mail, the call, made at 1:51 p.m. on the day of her death, captured a female dispatcher describing the “Heroes” and “Nashville” star as suffering a cardiac arrest. Moments later, a male dispatcher could be heard stating that Panettiere had experienced a suspected overdose at her rented apartment in Greenville, South Carolina.

The Greenville County Coroner later reported that Panettiere showed “no signs of trauma that would have contributed to the death,” according to the same outlet. An unnamed source told TMZ that the nasal medication Narcan, commonly used to reverse opioid overdoses, was found in a mattress at the scene. The Daily Mail noted that it remains unclear whether that Narcan had been used in an attempt to revive Panettiere.

Panettiere’s death comes several months after the release of her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which she detailed personal struggles dating back to childhood. As Variety reported at the time, one of the book’s most shocking revelations is her memory, from when she was 18, of being lured by a friend into a room and told to get into bed with a famous naked male actor. She recounted the story on the “On Purpose With Jay Shetty” podcast, saying, “Even though I felt I could make healthy decisions, safe decisions [at that age], I wasn’t capable of being fully aware of what was going on around me.”

In the memoir, Panettiere also opened up about the “heartbreaking” decision to give up custody of her daughter, her experience with postpartum depression, and her struggle with alcoholism — issues she said began to mirror the storyline of Juliette Barnes, the troubled singer she played on “Nashville.” Despite her past struggles, in the weeks leading up to her death, Panettiere appeared hopeful and at peace, with her final Instagram post on July 27 celebrating “good times and good friends.”

Authorities have not yet officially ruled on the cause of death, but the 911 recording and the reported presence of Narcan point to a possible overdose. The investigation is ongoing as fans and colleagues mourn the loss of a talented actress whose roles touched many.
