In a race that defied national Democratic trends, Republican Nino Mangione — cousin of convicted CEO killer Luigi Mangione — secured re-election to the Baltimore County Council this week by campaigning on a tough-on-crime message that resonated with voters.
Mangione, 39, narrowly defeated Democrat Shawn McIntosh with 48.7% of the vote in what Newsweek described as the county’s “purplest” district. The victory comes despite his family ties to Luigi Mangione, who pleaded guilty earlier this year to stalking and killing United Health Care CEO Brian Thompson in a high-profile 2024 Manhattan shooting.
A Study in Contrasts
The two cousins represent starkly different paths from the same prominent Baltimore family. While Luigi became a radical figurehead for healthcare activists after his violent crime, Nino has built his political career as an anti-crime conservative.
“Violent crime is increasing in Baltimore County,” states Mangione’s campaign website. “Murders, shootings, carjackings, and robberies are all at record levels.” The councilman-elect advocates for maximum penalties for violent offenders and criticizes what he calls the judicial system’s “too liberal” approach.
Political Pedigree
Both men are among 37 grandchildren of the late Nick Mangione Sr., a self-made millionaire whose business empire included country clubs, nursing homes, and radio stations. The family’s healthcare connections run deep — their patriarch donated millions to medical centers, including the hospital where the cousins were born.
Nino Mangione had already served in Maryland’s House of Delegates from 2023-2026 before winning his council seat. Though he canceled a fundraiser following his cousin’s arrest, he has consistently refused to discuss the case publicly.
His campaign also highlights opposition to “woke policies of the radical left” and touts his pro-business record — an ironic contrast to Luigi’s violent protest against healthcare executives.
