Michigan Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed (D) claimed Thursday that former President Donald Trump’s economic policies led to 300,000 Black women losing jobs due to “structural racism,” during an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.
El-Sayed, a progressive Democrat who won his Senate race this week, argued that systemic discrimination worsened economic outcomes for marginalized groups under the Trump administration. “You look at who lost jobs in Trump’s economy—300,000 jobs lost by Black women—and that’s because structural racism still really does exist,” he said.
Linking Job Losses to Racial Disparities
The incoming senator tied the alleged job losses to broader Republican policy failures, accusing the GOP of scapegoating minority communities. “When you have a bad economy, it hurts people whose access to the economy was worse to begin with,” he said. El-Sayed suggested voters rejected Trump-aligned candidates in the midterms as a rebuke to divisive rhetoric.
His remarks came during a discussion with New York Times opinion writer Mara Gay, who framed the election as a “rejection of Trumpism” and a push for multiracial democracy. El-Sayed agreed, arguing that GOP leaders “turned around and blamed a whole bunch of people who didn’t look like JD Vance or Donald Trump” for economic struggles.
Broader Midterm Messaging
The Democrat framed the election results as a demand for inclusive economic policies. “These folks are showing up and saying, actually, I want to vote for an economy that includes me, too,” he said. El-Sayed’s comments reflect progressive efforts to center racial equity in post-midterm messaging, though fact-checkers have not yet verified his specific job loss claim.
Republicans have repeatedly denied accusations of systemic racism in economic policy, pointing to record-low Black unemployment rates pre-pandemic under Trump. The debate over racial disparities in employment is likely to intensify as Democrats prepare to defend Senate control in 2024.
