Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis argues Republicans can rebound in the Senate by targeting vulnerable Democrats in 2028, dismissing doomsday predictions for the GOP.

DeSantis Warns GOP Must Course-Correct as Six Vulnerable Democratic Senate Seats Loom in 2028

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is pushing back against Republican panic over recent electoral losses, arguing the party still has a path to reclaim the Senate by targeting six vulnerable Democratic seats in 2028. In recent interviews, DeSantis acknowledged GOP struggles but dismissed apocalyptic predictions that the party won’t win back the chamber for over a decade.

The 2028 Senate Map: A GOP Opportunity?

DeSantis pointed to six Democratic senators up for re-election in 2028 who could be at risk in a favorable political environment: Mark Kelly (Arizona), Raphael Warnock (Georgia), Catherine Cortez Masto (Nevada), Maggie Hassan (New Hampshire), Sherrod Brown (Ohio), and John Fetterman (Pennsylvania). All represent states with recent Republican victories or competitive histories.

“If we finish down 55-45 in this cycle, you could theoretically win back the Senate in 2028,” DeSantis argued, noting Hassan’s sub-50% re-election margin in 2022 and Fetterman’s occasional breaks with Democratic orthodoxy. He emphasized that electoral maps shift, citing Democrats’ recent gains in traditionally red states like Texas and Kansas as proof that no outcome is predetermined.

DeSantis’ Broader Warning to the GOP

The potential 2028 presidential contender delivered a blunt assessment of Republican vulnerabilities, telling Laura Ingraham the party is “not viable nationally” if it can’t win states like Kansas, Iowa, or Texas. He called the Democratic sweep in Texas—which ousted Republicans from the governor’s mansion to the state Supreme Court—a potential “extinction event” with national repercussions.

DeSantis also critiqued the Biden administration’s handling of Middle East conflicts, arguing prolonged engagement has driven up gas prices and alienated voters. “Had [the Iran conflict] been wrapped up in like a week like Venezuela was, it probably wouldn’t have been an issue,” he told Stephen A. Smith.

Democrats’ Coming Challenges

While acknowledging Democratic momentum, DeSantis predicted the party would overreach once in power, comparing their agenda to “jumping on every rake.” He mocked Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s “Relief is on the way” promise as a precursor to policies that could stifle economic growth, pointing to a 2.5% drop in the Dow Jones at market open post-election.

The Florida governor’s comments come as Republicans grapple with unexpected midterm losses and an evolving electoral map. But DeSantis insists the GOP’s future isn’t doomed—if it learns from recent mistakes. “We are not at the end of the road in the Senate,” he said. “But that does require course correction.”
