Authorities in Florida have arrested an Ohio couple after they allegedly forced their way into another family’s cruise ship cabin and attacked three people, including a 9-year-old child, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.
Gannon Jacox, 29, and his girlfriend Brooklyn Hicks, 28, were taken into custody Saturday evening at Port Canaveral after their ship docked, officials said. The alleged incident unfolded after the couple had been drinking and arguing loudly, prompting a fellow passenger to ask them to quiet down.
According to Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey, the request for quiet was not well received. Hicks allegedly went to confront the family, and Jacox followed while recording on his cell phone and encouraging Hicks to “beat them up.”
The pair then pushed their way into the victims’ cabin, where a 9-year-old child was present, and a fight broke out. Sheriff Ivey wrote in a Facebook post that Jacox ended up striking all three people in the cabin, including the child, while Hicks was “just swinging, hoping one would land.”
Jacox himself suffered a “pretty gross injury to his eye,” which the sheriff said may have been caused by one of the victims defending themselves or by “friendly fire” from Hicks’s wild punches. Fortunately, none of the family members were seriously injured in what Ivey called a “ridiculous escapade.”
The couple was booked into the Brevard County Jail. Jacox faces charges of burglary with battery and child abuse without great bodily harm, with bond set at $31,000. Hicks is charged with burglary with battery and battery-touch/strike, with bond set at $6,000, according to local reporting.
In his Facebook post, Ivey offered a pointed moral to the incident, suggesting that if someone cannot handle their alcohol, they should not be out in public causing a scene and injuring innocent people, including children. He also quipped that the pair’s “very expensive shore excursion” would now include a stay at what he called “Ivey’s Iron Bar Lodge” — the county jail.
The incident is just the latest example of unruly behavior disrupting cruise travel, a trend that has drawn increased attention from law enforcement and the cruise industry alike. While no serious injuries were reported, the alleged assault on a child has drawn particular outrage.
Authorities did not release the names of the victims, and no further details about the family’s condition were provided.
