Sen. Darline Graham (R-SC) on Wednesday defended her recent comments about Taiwan, saying she was simply being honest and that many Americans couldn’t locate the island on a map anyway. Appearing on Fox News Channel’s Hannity, Graham pushed back against the scrutiny she faced after stumbling on a question about national security during a recent appearance.
“I’m not a politician, certainly not a career politician. I don’t speak politician. I was just honest,” Graham told host Sean Hannity. “I think that’s kind of a foreign concept.”
The controversy began when Graham acknowledged she wasn’t fully informed on national security matters, a remark that drew sharp criticism from opponents and political observers. But the South Carolina Republican insisted her candidness resonated with voters back home.
“I talked to several people today, I traveled around the state, and they said, we appreciated the fact that you were honest,” Graham said.
Taiwan, China Remarks
Graham also addressed her comments about Taiwan, which had become a flashpoint in the discussion. She reiterated that she considers China a threat to the United States and Taiwan a friend, but argued that most Americans don’t prioritize the issue.
“I did say, several times, that China is our enemy, a military and economic threat to the United States. Of course, Taiwan is our friend,” Graham said. But she added, “I don’t think many people can find Taiwan on a map.”
Hannity echoed that sentiment, wondering aloud how many Americans could pinpoint Taiwan on a map if asked. “I don’t think many, and not just in — I mean the whole country, never mind South Carolina,” he said.
Graham agreed with Hannity’s assessment, saying, “Right. I think you’re 100% right, Sean.” She acknowledged tripping up on the question but emphasized that her focus remains on the concerns of everyday South Carolinians.
Voters’ Priorities
According to Graham, the issues that matter most to her constituents are far more domestic in nature. “I think people in South Carolina are more worried about making ends meet,” she said. “They’re concerned about boys in girl’s sports. One lady talked to me extensively about that today. They’re concerned about the 2nd Amendment.”
She added that voters are also focused on the SAVE America Act and illegal immigration, concluding, “They’re concerned about a lot of other things other than Taiwan.”
Graham did acknowledge the importance of national security and noted the United States has a “wonderful commander-in-chief.” She expressed support for standing with Israel and taking Iran’s threats seriously, but reiterated that her attention is on “issues for everyday people in South Carolina that are struggling to make ends meet.”
Hannity Weighs In
Hannity, who has been a prominent supporter of President Donald Trump, suggested it’s reasonable for voters to judge Graham based on her remarks. “I do think it’s fair if people want to judge her on the issue,” he said.
The senator’s comments highlight a broader tension in Republican politics between foreign policy credentials and a grassroots focus on domestic concerns. Graham’s defense — that honesty trumps political polish — may resonate with some voters even as critics argue it exposes a lack of preparedness for high-stakes national security decisions.
