A Hungarian military pilot walked away without a scratch after his fighter jet went down on a training flight Monday, according to Prime Minister Péter Magyar, who said the cause of the crash remains unknown.
The Swedish-made JAS 39 Gripen crashed near the central Hungarian city of Szolnok “for reasons that are still unknown,” Magyar wrote in a Facebook post, adding that an investigation is underway and that Defense Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi was traveling to the scene.
Ruszin-Szendi later confirmed the pilot was “alive and has not sustained any injuries,” and praised the aviator’s actions in the moments before impact.
“It appears the pilot did everything he could to ensure the crashed aircraft landed on military property,” the minister said in a video posted to Facebook, noting he was heading to the crash site alongside the chief of staff of the Hungarian defense forces.
The incident occurred near Szolnok, a city in central Hungary that hosts a helicopter base just outside its limits. Mayor Mihály Gy”orfi told local media the pilot “was probably training as usual” at that base, and confirmed there were no known injuries from the crash itself.
The downed aircraft is part of Hungary’s fleet of 18 JAS 39 Gripens, a Swedish-built multirole fighter used by several European air forces. Fourteen of those jets were acquired through a lease-purchase program launched in 2001, while four additional aircraft were ordered in 2024 and joined the fleet this year.
Monday’s crash marks a rare incident involving the Gripen in Hungarian service, and the prompt ejection of the pilot is likely to be a focus of the investigation. Experts will be scrutinizing maintenance records, weather conditions, and the aircraft’s flight data to determine what went wrong.
Hungary has relied on the Gripen for its air defense and NATO commitments, and the fleet has been based primarily at Kecskemét Air Base, though training flights and exercises regularly bring aircraft to other locations across the country.
The Hungarian defense ministry has not yet released further details about the crash, but officials have emphasized that the pilot’s safe ejection and the avoidance of civilian casualties are the most important outcomes.
The investigation is expected to take some time, and military authorities have urged the public to stay clear of the crash site while technicians and investigators complete their work.
