Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) said Monday that President Donald Trump has “committed impeachable offenses,” but cautioned that Democrats should prioritize kitchen-table issues over another impeachment push.
Appearing on MSNBC’s “State of Play,” Van Hollen was asked by host Peter Alexander whether Democrats should impeach Trump again if they retake the House and possibly the Senate in the upcoming elections. Van Hollen responded by acknowledging the president’s conduct while steering the conversation toward the party’s broader agenda.
“Peter, I think our focus should be on these issues that are top of mind for the American people,” Van Hollen said. “That means dealing with the affordability crisis, ending the senseless war in Iran. But it is important to hold this administration accountable for all its lies.”
The Maryland Democrat pointed to the administration’s handling of the shooting of American citizens in Minneapolis by DHS agents, saying the agency has not held those responsible to account. Instead, he said, the administration is “going after Renee Good’s partner,” a reference that appeared to cite an ongoing case.
“So we do need absolutely to hold this lawless Trump administration accountable,” Van Hollen continued. “That’s what we should be focused on as well as these other important issues.”
When Alexander pressed him directly on whether Democrats should impeach the president if they win control of the House, Van Hollen did not back away from his earlier statement.
“I think he’s committed impeachable offenses,” Van Hollen said. “I think our focus should be on dealing with these big economic issues and taking other measures to hold members of this administration accountable.”
The comments come as some grassroots Democrats have called for a third impeachment of Trump if the party regains a congressional majority. Van Hollen’s remarks suggest a balancing act—acknowledging the appetite for impeachment among the base while cautioning that economic concerns should remain front and center.
Van Hollen’s reference to the “war in Iran” aligns with recent reporting on U.S. military actions in the region, though he did not provide additional details during the interview. His mention of the Minneapolis shooting and the case involving “Renee Good’s partner” also lacked specifics, but the senator framed both as examples of administration overreach and a refusal to be held accountable.
The senator’s appearance on “State of Play” is the latest instance of Democratic lawmakers grappling with how to respond to Trump’s actions while also addressing voter concerns about the economy and foreign conflicts.
Alexander’s questioning highlighted the tension within the Democratic coalition, as some activists and progressive groups push for aggressive oversight and potential impeachment, while party leadership has generally sought to avoid re-litigating past impeachment battles in favor of a broader policy message.
