Yet he continued to climb the political ladder, now presiding over a state with roughly 182,000 homeless residents and the nation’s highest cost-of-living-adjusted poverty rate.
The column also highlights New York City’s Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) figures, starting with 34-year-old Michael “Mamdani” — the article’s moniker for the Queens lawmaker and socialist. Born in Kampala to an Oscar-nominated filmmaker and a Columbia professor, Mamdani was raised in Manhattan’s Upper West Side bubble. He spent his twenties as a C-list rapper named Mr. Cardamom, lived rent-free in his parents’ plush apartment, and now campaigns on eliminating rent for millions, making groceries free, and ousting billionaires — proposals the piece dismisses as fantasy.
“I am young, despite my best efforts to grow older,” Mamdani said in his victory speech, a line the column mocks as proof of his immaturity. Under his influence, the piece argues, the city has seen jailed criminals freed, terror threats rise, and affordability collapse, all while “Wendys” — hardworking taxpayers — are attacked for their success.
The critique extends to other DSA members. City council co-chair Gustavo Gordilla, who boasts of seizing the means of production, reportedly lives in a $1.5 million townhouse with his parents covering the mortgage. Tracy Rosenthal, an advisor to the mayor, hasn’t paid rent on her $2,300-a-month apartment in nearly six years, despite being a trust-fund beneficiary of her four-time Grammy-winning father. Cea Weaver, another DSA figure, calls homeownership a “weapon of white supremacy” while her mother owns a $1.6 million Nashville compound.
The column also takes aim at Senator Bernie Sanders, calling him the “original Lost Boy” — though his graying hair suggests he’s aged physically, not mentally. After four decades on the public payroll, three houses, and millions in book deals, the piece claims Sanders still offers the same speech he gave decades ago, without a single measurable policy win to show for it.
Beneath the mockery lies a serious argument: that these politicians, insulated by inherited wealth, have no understanding of the real economy.
