President Donald Trump on Sunday urged Canadian companies that do business with the United States to move their operations south of the border, promising that any firm that relocates will avoid the tariffs he has threatened against Canadian goods.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump addressed Canadian businesses directly, saying they should move to the U.S. “immediately,” and adding that many of them had left years ago “due to stupid U.S. Leadership.”
“Let all Canadian Companies that are doing business with America move to the United States, immediately,” Trump wrote. “Many of them are Companies that moved out years ago due to stupid U.S. Leadership. When you move back, there are no TARIFFS!”
The message follows comments Trump made during an interview Wednesday on the Glenn Beck Program, where he described Canada as “one of the worst countries in the world to deal with” and accused the country of having “taken advantage of the United States for many decades.”
Trump’s latest broadside against Canada comes amid an escalating trade dispute between the two nations. Earlier this month, Trump announced that starting January 1, 2027, he would impose 50 percent tariffs on a wide range of Canadian imports, including all cars, trucks — both large and small — automotive parts, and steel, according to Breitbart News’s Nick Gilbertson.
In that announcement, Trump again accused Canada of unfair trade practices, writing: “Canada has been ripping off the United States of America for years. Their ridiculously high tariffs on our Farmers and farm products has made life impossible for these great American Patriots, and has long created a 60 Billion Dollar Deficit between our two Countries. Not sustainable, and NOT ANYMORE!”
Trump has also taken symbolic steps in the feud, including signing an order to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” a move that drew sharp reactions from Canadian officials and the public.
The president’s invitation to Canadian companies is the latest in a series of aggressive moves aimed at reshaping U.S.-Canada trade relations. While Trump has framed the tariffs as necessary to address long-standing imbalances, critics have warned that such measures could raise costs for consumers and disrupt integrated supply chains in the auto and steel industries.
