The Republican National Committee is taking its fight to the U.S. Supreme Court this fall to defend Arizona’s proof-of-citizenship voting law, a case RNC Chairman Joe Gruters described as one of the most consequential election integrity battles in a generation.
At the center of the dispute is a basic question: Can states require proof of citizenship before adding someone to voter rolls? Arizona voters approved Proposition 200 more than two decades ago, requiring such proof, and the state later expanded tools for election officials to verify citizenship and maintain accurate voter rolls.
But Democrats and activist groups have sued repeatedly to block those requirements, arguing they are burdensome, discriminatory, or constitute voter suppression. Gruters, in an exclusive interview with Breitbart News, framed the case as a fundamental test of whether states retain authority to enforce election laws as written.
RNC Leading the Legal Battle
The RNC is leading the effort to defend Arizona’s law after Democrats went to court to block it and prevent the state from removing noncitizens from voter rolls. The case will help determine whether states have the power to protect election integrity, Gruters said.
“If citizenship is required to vote, election officials should be able to confirm that requirement is met,” Gruters said, arguing that Americans prove their identity daily—whether boarding a plane, opening a bank account, or accessing basic services.
The Supreme Court’s decision could have implications far beyond Arizona. Similar legal challenges have emerged nationwide, with groups opposing voter ID laws, resisting voter roll cleanups, and challenging measures designed to verify voter eligibility.
170 Lawsuits Nationwide
Gruters noted that the RNC is currently engaged in over 170 election integrity lawsuits across the country, from North Carolina to Georgia to Michigan to Texas to Virginia. The cases range from defending voter ID requirements to protecting mail-in ballot safeguards and ensuring accurate voter rolls.
The Arizona case, however, represents what Gruters called “the landmark battle” in the next chapter of that fight.
Gruters, a Florida state senator who has served as RNC chairman since August 2025, has a long history in Republican politics, including chairmanships of the Florida GOP and the RNC’s Election Integrity committee.
The Supreme Court is expected to hear arguments in the case later this fall. A ruling could set a precedent for how states across the country handle citizenship verification in elections.
