An explosion ripped through a passageway at Augsburg’s main train station in the early hours of Wednesday morning, leaving two people injured and triggering a major police operation that shut down the station for hours, according to German media reports.
The blast occurred at approximately 3:15 a.m. local time in a building passageway at the station, the Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper reported. The two victims, identified as 17- and 18-year-olds, suffered blast and acoustic trauma and were being treated for their injuries, the paper said.
The passageway is home to a bank and a Turkish jewelry store, according to Augsburger Allgemeine. Police have not yet confirmed the nature of the explosive device, but unconfirmed statements received by the newspaper suggested it may have been a hand grenade.
The incident prompted an immediate and sweeping response. A major police deployment was visible at the station from the early morning hours. Messages on station monitors urged passengers to evacuate: “Attention: Evacuation! Please leave the station immediately via the Post Tunnel!” read one alert.
Compounding the situation, Schwaben North Police announced that a second suspicious object had been discovered. As a result, the entire station was closed around 8:00 a.m. and all passengers were evacuated. Train service was suspended while officers cordoned off the area.
The station began to reopen roughly two hours later, with train traffic resuming shortly afterward, per Augsburger Allgemeine. However, police spokesman Michael Niefenecker said the investigation could take “several hours” and that parts of nearby streets would remain closed.
German authorities have not commented extensively on the nature of the incident or any potential motives. Local police officers reportedly declined to provide further details in the immediate aftermath.
Die Welt reported that Germany’s State Criminal Police Office (LKA) deployed an explosives expert and a bomb-disposal robot to the scene, while police conducted searches using surveillance drones.
The Bild newspaper reported that investigators are examining whether the incident is connected to organized crime. “The main station was apparently not the destination,” Bild wrote, suggesting the explosion may have been intended for a location other than the station itself.
Augsburg, located roughly 35 miles west of Munich, is a key regional transport hub, and the closure of its main station caused significant disruption to rail services in the area.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have yet to determine the exact nature of the explosive object or the circumstances surrounding the incident.
