President Trump touted the August jobs report as beating expectations and called for lower interest rates, while economists had predicted only 55,000 jobs.

Trump celebrates August jobs report, says 162,000 jobs 'broke all estimates' and renews Fed rate cut demands

President Donald Trump reacted to the latest jobs report on Thursday, celebrating the U.S. economy’s addition of 162,000 jobs in August and claiming the figure “broke all estimates” by double and triple. In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump also renewed his push for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates, arguing that a stronger U.S. credit position warrants lower borrowing costs.

“Great jobs number just announced, breaking all estimates (except mine!) by double and triple – And you haven’t seen anything yet!” Trump wrote. “EMPLOYERS ADDED 162,000 JOB IN AUGUST.”

The president’s remarks came as economists had forecast a gain of just 55,000 jobs for the month, according to the source report from Breitbart News. The unemployment rate was also expected to tick up to 4.2 percent from 4.1 percent in July, though the August figure was not detailed in the cited material.

Trump reiterates call for lower rates

In his Truth Social posts, Trump repeatedly urged the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates, writing, “Lower the interest rates because the U.S.A. is a much stronger credit than it was just a short time ago!” He added, “A STRONG COUNTRY MEANS A LOWER INTEREST RATE – IT’S A BETTER CREDIT… Very simple!”

The president went further, advocating for the U.S. to have “the LOWEST RATE of any country in the World,” harking back to “the old days.” He also threatened trade actions against countries with which the U.S. runs deficits, saying, “LOWER THE RATE OR I’LL STOP TRADING WITH COUNTRIES WITH WHICH WE HAVE A DEFICIT,” citing a Supreme Court ruling that he said affirmed the president’s authority to do so.

Trump’s comments follow the Supreme Court’s recent tariff decision, which he characterized as “ridiculous and very costly,” but which he acknowledged recognized presidential power over trade. He argued that using trade leverage would be “BETTER THAN TARIFFS.”

The president also directed criticism at the Federal Reserve Board, saying, “The Fed Board, with its great new leader, must get smart – BE PATRIOTS for a change. High interest rates put the U.S.A. at a very unfair disadvantage, and I won’t allow that to happen!”

Jobs report details beat expectations

According to Breitbart News economics correspondent John Carney, the August jobs report showed broad strength across several sectors. The private sector added 127,000 jobs in August, significantly exceeding the 53,000 that had been expected. The prior month’s private-sector gain was also revised upward, from 30,000 to 71,000.

Manufacturing payrolls rose by 16,000 in August, beating the 5,000 estimate. The July manufacturing figure was also revised higher, from a gain of 5,000 to 14,000. Durable goods manufacturing added 15,000 jobs in August, following gains of 24,000 in July and 13,000 in June.

The report also revised away the previous month’s reported job loss. The July estimate was revised up by 44,000, turning a loss of 23,000 into a gain of 21,000. The June gain was revised up by 11,000 to 31,000. Combined, the revisions added 55,000 jobs to the June and July totals.

Scott praises report

Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) also weighed in on the August jobs numbers, praising the Trump administration and Congress for their focus on American employment. “This administration and Congress have prioritized American jobs from day one,” Scott wrote in a post on X. “The August jobs report proves it: 162,000 private sector jobs added to the U.S. economy. More jobs. More opportunity.”

Note: While Scott’s post referenced “private sector jobs,” the top-line figure of 162,000 includes both private and government jobs, according to standard BLS reporting. The private sector figure was 127,000. The discrepancy was not addressed in the source material.

The jobs report adds to a mixed economic picture as the Federal Reserve considers its next policy moves. Trump has repeatedly called for rate cuts throughout his term, and today’s better-than-expected employment data gives him fresh ammunition in that ongoing push.
