House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) is not guaranteed to retain his leadership position, according to Rep. Ben Cline (R-VA), who said Tuesday that the New York Democrat is “in trouble” amid pressure from progressive lawmakers and candidates.
Appearing on Fox Business Network’s “Mornings,” Cline argued that Jeffries could face a challenge not only if Democrats win the House in November — potentially positioning him for Speaker — but even if the party stays in the minority.
“Oh, I think Hakeem Jeffries is in trouble. I don’t think he is guaranteed to be any leader, even when they remain in the minority,” Cline said.
Host Cheryl Casone set up the discussion by citing a CNN report that progressive House members and candidates are urging party leaders behind the scenes to embrace more liberal policies — something, she said, Jeffries “seems to be hesitant to do.” Casone asked whether, if Democrats were to flip the House in November, there would be significant pressure on Jeffries’ leadership.
Cline responded by pointing to newly elected Democrats from New York and other districts, whom he described as “Democrat socialists” who would push for more radical leadership within the party. He contrasted that with Republicans, whom he predicted would retain control of the House.
“I think that the Democrats coming in from New York, the Democrat socialists, the Democrat socialists coming in from other Democrat seats, are going to want more radical leadership in the Democrat Party, because we’re going to keep control and we’re going to be in control of the majority,” Cline said.
Cline added that Democrats in the minority would remain “rudderless, leaderless, and directionless, as they have been for these past several months.”
Jeffries, who has served as House Democratic leader since January 2023, has generally maintained unified support within his caucus, but the congressman’s comments highlight ongoing tensions between the party’s moderate establishment and its more progressive wing — tensions that could intensify depending on November’s results.
Neither Jeffries’ office nor the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee immediately responded to a request for comment on Cline’s remarks.
Cline, a conservative Republican representing Virginia’s 6th District, is a member of the House Judiciary Committee and has frequently criticized Democratic leadership on fiscal and immigration policy.
The CNN report referenced by Casone described quiet efforts by progressive members and candidates to shift the party’s platform further left, with some expressing frustration over what they see as a cautious approach by leadership in the run-up to the midterms.
While Cline’s comments are largely speculative from a Republican vantage point, they reflect broader GOP strategy to portray Democratic leadership as fractured and out of step with the party’s activist base. Whether Jeffries actually faces a serious challenge would depend on the makeup of the next caucus and the political fallout from the election.
For now, Cline’s prediction is clear: “I think Hakeem Jeffries is in trouble.”
