Nashville’s airport is on track to carry Dolly Parton’s name. The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority’s board of commissioners voted 6-0 on Friday to modify its existing naming policy, the first formal step toward renaming Nashville International Airport in honor of the late country music legend.
The board announced the vote in a press release and confirmed it in a social media post from the airport’s official account, which called the decision the opening move in the renaming effort. The authority did not commit to a final name, saying only that the process is continuing.
“While a final name has not yet been determined, we are working closely with the appropriate parties to thoughtfully determine how Dolly Parton’s name and legacy will be incorporated,” the board said.

Officials described the renaming as “a multifaceted process” and said more definitive plans for next steps and implementation would be shared in the coming months. That leaves open questions about the exact wording of the new name, the cost of rebranding signage and materials, and when the change would take effect at one of the region’s busiest travel hubs.
Modifying the naming policy was a necessary prerequisite before the board could act on the airport’s name itself. The unanimous vote gives the effort a clear mandate from the authority’s commissioners.
Parton Died Aug. 25 at 80
Parton died at age 80 on Aug. 25 in Nashville. She was a Tennessee native, born and raised in the state, and her theme park, Dollywood, sits in Pigeon Forge outside Knoxville — a tourist draw that helped cement her status as one of the state’s most recognizable figures.
Her career stretched across decades as a singer-songwriter, and her ties to Tennessee ran deep in both her personal history and her business ventures. The airport renaming effort follows her death and taps into a broader push to memorialize her in the state she called home.
Governor Backed the Idea
Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee said after Parton’s death that he wanted Nashville International Airport renamed after the singer-songwriter as a tribute to what he described as her “indelible legacy.” The airport board’s action on Friday moves that idea from a public suggestion toward an institutional decision.
